It appears lightly cleaned in these images. VG details and probably market-acceptable for a straight-grade.

I see no evidence of cleaning.

And a question - how can this be a VG-10 with only 2 letters of Liberty ("LI") clearly visible? Only traces of any other letter. Comments invited.

Agree with Coinfrog. For me, I need to see 3 Letters in Liberty to reach VG.

Take a look at the PCGS Photograde VG-10 obverse . It has nearly identical amounts of detail. You can see part of every letter. The reverse has much stronger feather/wing detail than I would expect to see on a VG-08 as well. If you take a look at the VG grading from David Lawrence's Complete Guide to Barber Havles, it lines up with VG-10.

I'm at VG10 as well Quote: how can this be a VG-10 with only 2 letters of Liberty ("LI") clearly visible? because you can't just look at one marker to determine a grade full rims with denticles. full motto. sharpness of lettering on both sides. roundness of date, cap definition. there are more markers. to me it looks like really nice solid VG10. the gung on the rev will most likely come off with acetone

Looks like a VG-10 to me. Nice semi-key date.

For the gunk on the reverse... Full dip or spot it with a qtip (using 100% acetone, of course)

I would let it soak for a few hours at least.

Thanks everyone! I wasn't expecting a grade bump but the crud was annoying me haha

I'm not sure what was under that crud looks likes its original to the coin to me. it looks raised so maybe thats why the crud gathered around it. you never know whats going to be revealed if you acetone or vedicare a coin.
I do see what looks like very fine hairlines maybe from swiping the coin across the entire profile. all in the same direction. acetone did good. it may grade straight but those hairlines really point to a details coin. I don't think its harsh so it comes down to the coins grade and how they feel about them. I'm still at VG10

@pan, those hairlines look like an old clean to me and not from circulation... Although maybe it slide back and forth for a bit! Either way, I bundled it with a number of other things including some ASEs at .70 above spot... So I'm pleased with it; not a lot of Barber coinage here.
