The closeups help a lot!  Darn...I wish it were the "wide 9", but it looks to be the normal "narrow 9" date. |

You guys have got me very interested in this coin. I know there are many varieties. I have been looking at the 9 you guys want to look at so badly. It seems that it is maybe sitting on an 8? I have used a straight edge to look at the level of the numbers, the 9 does sit lower than the others. I do not have the knowledge in what is normal. So can someone explain to me something? What are you exactly looking for? Thank you. I have a better idea.

there is an 9 over 8, but that is not yours.. unless it is a new variety...

Looking at mine it looks as the part of the eight was removed but not all the way. The outline of the eight is very significant. I know on my scans I can not show this detail. You can see this detail from both sides of the nine tail. It was clearly an eight slightly modified to a nine. That is before you showed me the close shots. With the darkness of the piece I do not know if it will even show in a photo. It is clearly seen under a glass. I will keep experimenting and see if I can get a clear shot of it to post. Those are very good diagnostic photos and diagrams. Zakota, I see the closeup on the 9, and that raised area on the right is sure interesting. It's worth taking a close look at that date.  I don't have any coins from this year, so I can't offer a guess on experience. Edited by DVCollector

try setting your camera to the Macro setting ( looks like a tulip) and disable the flash.
experiment with that.
OR set the dpi setting on your scanner to 1200 and try then.
there seems to be something with that coin...

Thanks hhbkiddo. If you look at the bottom of the opening in the top of the nine it is also quit thin, you think? Right above your center arrow on bottom. I will go and rub this coin into the local coin dealers face. I showed this to him two weeks ago. He said he did not even have time to look at a Canadian coin, even if it was during his lunch break. I have never had a coin like this before. What should I do from here? I can't get the email feature to work?

The 9 looks like a narrow 9. There were lots of different 9/9's, re-engraved 9's and the like. The web site I always start with is http://varieties.piczo.com/?g=1&cr=3There is an email feature on the guest comment page if you want to get the author to look at something. There is just a very small portion of his work up on the site. It's really worth checking out if you are starting to get into 1859's |

I don't know anything about Canadian cents, but since I'm into mostly pre-1900 stuff, I think these are a great deal at $5! Nice acquisition!

Thank you for all the help. I had also found a site for the 59'ers. But it was not as good as Dan's. I am in the process taking photo's of the other numbers and letters involved with the varieties. If I find anything I will post them. I give you guys my kudos!   |
