what I'm not 100% sure if it's a D or S mint mark

If an S wouldn't the reverse look like a proof strike then?

It was struck through a late-stage die cap.

Did the die cap also cause the unusual rim/edge features?

Responding to Tacc, many capped die strikes feature a "wire rim", where the surface of the coin slopes upward along the periphery. The wire rim corresponds to the (typically) rounded junction between the working face of the die cap and the wall.

Thank you very much Mike. I was scratching my head on this one, couldn't find a definitive answer online.
A good clue was that both of Alonz's capped die strike through coins had similar rims. Thank's again!
