G'day Greg! Welcome. Even though rggoodie lives on the opposite side of the dateline, he's an aussie expat. We have a few Australian collectors on the board and would enjoy your input as well. Don

Hello Don. Very many thanks for the kind welcome - most appreciated! When I first saw the forum, I wondered what the term "darkside" meant, now I know. Its amazing what knowledge can be learned from the information provided. I am also collecting the United States State Quarters (an excellent program I think). I've seen some posts from RG and MikeQld, both very knowledgable people. Regards Greg

Welcome Greg, Great to have another Aussie and a darksider on board! Actually we have two of the commemoratives here as well but my wife won't let me lay claim to hers!!! You know the old saying, Whats mine is hers and whats hers is hers! Seems to work out that way at times. If there is any way I can help you out with any coin needs, feel free to email as I trade all over Europe and have bought a few items from Austrialia as well! Guess I am trying to help all the economies in the world the best I can. Look forward to hearing from you!

G'day Terry, Thanks also for the kind welcome. The Darkside? That's the second time I have heard that term (LOL). On my office floor, we have two groups. The long term planners sit on the west side, while we grass routes, service delivers sit on the east side and see the sun first. We're normally in from around 6-7AM, and the planners don't show until 8-9, and their side is usually in darkness until then. With coins, mainly Australian decimal, I do buy some pre-decimal when I can get it at a decent price. With the dark side, my on-going plan is an uncirculated set from every country. I also plan to obtain 6-7 sets of the State Quarters. Have a good one Regards Greg

Well Greg, Let me see if I can clarify this for you. Over here if you are know to actively collect anything other than U.S., well you are a darksider! And, seeing how you collect something FOREIGN that would make you a darksider from down under, if you know what I mean! Collecting foreign coins has really gotten a big boost since the internet came along. Prior to the internet foreign coin collectors were far and few so basically it was a very lonely hobby and foreign coins were cheaper by the pound but.....NOT NO MORE as more and more collectors are turning to the darkside and foreign coins have "come out of the closet" which we all can see by watching some of the auctions on ebay. Lots of competition now! I enjoy the history and learning experiences I have found by expanding my collection! Didn't realize what I was missing!

Thanks Terry, appreciate the info. Actually, my work colleagues think I am a little crazy. I run the works coffee (paid) and refreshment ((honour) sections and pick up some nice coins (repaid of course). Amazing what what I find, usually New Zealand, but have found others. There are some Aussie circulating coins that are rare, as the 1991 and 1997 10 cents. The 97 ten cent has a book value of up to $65. I got one in change recently. But the best way to get them is through the mint sets at $50-$110 -depending on dealer or ebay. The 20 & 50 cents and $1s are also worth a bit in UNC Another advantage of Aussie coins, is with our low population (20Mil) the issues can be rather small. An example is the 2000 normal $1, with a 7Mil mintage. The book value is now up to $30 for spec UNC These are great if you can find a year 2000 $1 mule (1 dollar on ten cent blank) The book starts around $1000, but the values have come down on ebay. Almost but not quite accurate. It's not a $1 on a 10c blank. It's a $1 reverse and a 10c obverse struck on a $1 planchet. You can see the extra lip more clearly at the base but it does go around approx 3/4 of the coin due to the 10c obverse being smaller. This example also has an offset obverse die which is why the lip isn't all the way around. Offset obverse 2000 $1/10c muleThis scan is of a fully centred obverse strike. Centred obverse 2000 $1/10c mule

darkside what a strange term to use, did it come from the fact that FRODO never found the ring, someone on capital hill beat him to it.[:p][:p] lol

No one on Capital Hill found the ring! Frodo was safe there as no one on the hill would put that much effort in to looking for any thing unless someone did it for them. They have the power of raising their own wages, free health care for life, under the table cash, free air travel, and most importantly TAXATION! They didn't need the ring!

Ah but niksfree you are also another day wasted in your life when we are only beginning to waste ours? Or you have already paid your taxes and ours is yet to be taken? Either way I have yet to figure out why the other side of the world gets to be first? Guess you do have a great advantage to having us come over! We lose a day of our lives flying over and the only way we can get it back is to come home?
