Roll 3 Update:Roll 3 did not disappoint. Found two more 1950 key date coins. The roll 3 sort is in the foreground. The pile in the back are the keepers from the first two rolls. High level statisticsRoll 3 had 35 finds out of 38 coins. So the overall find rate (coins dated prior to 1960) through 3 rolls is 111 finds in 118 coins. Roll specific data1938 (1) 1939 (2) No DDR1940 (2) 1940-S (1) 1941 (2) 1941-D (1) 1946 (2) 1947 (1) 1947-D (1) 1948 (2) 1949 (2) 1950 (2) Key date, photo below1952-D (7) 1952-S (2) 1953 (1) 1953-D (1) 1954-D (1) 1954-S (1) 1955-D (1) 1956-D (1) 1958-D (1) 1963-D (1) Lustrous ~MS631964-D (1) 1969-D (1) The 1969-D is the oldest coins found in the 3 rolls searched. Secret Santa was good to his word that these coins came from a generation (or two) ago. I was surprised to view the MS 1963-D appear. It looks like it was minted yesterday. I placed it into a 2x2 so whoever claims Prize B can have it in its beautiful condition. Key date JeffersonI found two more 1950 (Philly) Jefferson in roll 3. They are well circulated examples which I judge to grade F/VF. I have all 3 1950 coins in 2x2 for eventual distribution. Onward to search roll 4! When I post those results the contest guessing period will end. http://goccf.com/t/474793

Roll 4 Update The great fun continues with another generations ago roll. Here is the roll 4 sort. As before left to right by date and vertical by mint (P, D, or S). The 4 coins in the 2x2 are the 1963-D MS63 and the three key date 1950 (Philly) coins. Overall Statistics This was an actual 40 coin roll. 37 of the 40 coins were dated prior to 1960. No key dates this time. Overall through 4 rolls I have found 148 "finds" in 155 coins searched. That is an amazing 95.48% find rate. Roll Specific Data:1939 (5) No DDR1940 (2) 1941 (2)1941-D (2) 1941-S (1) 1942 (1) 1946 (5)1947-S (2) 1948 (1) 1949 (1) 1949-D (2) 1951 (1) 1952-D (2) 1952-S (4) 1953 (1) 1954-D (2)1955-D (1) 1957-D (1) 1961-D (1) 1966 (1) 1975-D (1) The 1975-D is the 'newest' coin so far out of 4 rolls searched. For those of you participating in my Secret Santa roll search contest I have highlighted in bold font the pertinent coins. You can count as well as I can, and I come up with 9 so far - with one roll to go through. Onward to the final Roll #5! (Soon )

Roll 5 UpdateThe search is over and I send along my deepest Thank You to the Secret Santa who provided me with such a wonderful gift. Searching these five old rolls was truly like stepping back in time ~50 years! Great fun to find so many older nickels at staggering rates in these rolls. Recall that I consider a 'find' to any coin dated 1959 or prior. Round 5 was another winner with 37 'finds' in 40 coins. Overall the 5 rolls provided 185 'finds' out of 196 coins. That is a 94.39% find rate. This is equivalent to an average of 37 finds per roll. My overall find rate at 394,800 nickels searched was 1.274%. This is equivalent to an average of 1 find in every 2 rolls. Simply amazing Roll Specific Data Photo shows the Roll 5 sort. Coins were: 1939 (1) 1940 (1) 1940-D (2) 1941-D (2) 1946 (3)1946-D (2) 1947 (3) 1947-D (3) 1947-S (2) 1949 (3) 1949-D (3) 1951 (1) 1952-D (4) 1952-S (1) 1954-D (1)1954-S (1) 1955-D (2) 1957-D (1) 1959-D (1) 1970-S (2) 1972-D (1) For those participating in my roll search contest I have highlighted in bold font the coins that count for the contest. I'll head over there next and update the contest results. Thanks again to my 2024 Secret Santa!

nicklesearcher, it seems that you had a great time with your gift, and passed the nickels along to let someone else enjoy them too. How wonderful!
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Really enjoyed going through these old rolls. The 'thrill of the hunt' brought back fond memories of my many years as an active CRH hunter. I still have over 5,000 Jefferson 1959 and older set aside from those days so thrilled that igwt79 gets to enjoy these!

Very cool the fun you had with this and the obvious thought put into by the giver! It's nice that it sparked an old hunting flame.
