Well I pulled the trigger on this one and now I own it. It went a bit higher than I expected yet I feel I still did OK. I will add some photos here after it's in hand. After submitting this one for your opinions I did a little comparison shopping based on your consensus. Here are a couple of examples I found on ebay. A PCGS XF40 and a PCGS XF45. Both appear to have more wear than the the one in question. However the spike is more well defined. I would like to know your thoughts on this. The XF40 has the same Retained Cud across LIBERTY.

VF Details. It does look like a spiked chin that's not strong and/or does not show up well in these images.
P.S. It is XF Details.

With the new pics, I'd say VF-30, possibly details from the light scratches, although the scratches probably aren't as noticeable in hand. Is the color accurate, or is that from the lighting?

The color is darker. I'll try to get a shot that is closer to true color.

This image is closer to actual color. Is it possible for a Moderator to add " Spiked Chin to the title?

Is there anyone that can help with a Cohen designation on this?

As I said before, it's a C-8, late die state.

I recognize those images that are of Gold Standard Guy. He purchases coins in details holders and resells them as problem free. If that is the case, the story of this coin likely follows the same timeline.
Regardless, the obverse scratches would detail the coin anyway.

Quote: As I said before, it's a C-8, late die state. . Sorry about that Zurie. Large Cent Newcomb's have had me pulling my hair out. This is my first Half Cent. Very little information is available to identify the various Cohen varieties without a substantial investment in reference material. There is more to learn than I will ever accomplish in my remaining lifetime. Yet my curiosity always gets the best of me. Thanks for your help. Maybe one day I will get it.

I lurk around this auction often and thought I had learned my lesson and ignore the raw coins. Although, I have had occasional good buys. This one came home for around Greysheet VF30 bid price. I don't feel to bad though. Another lesson learned. I have been concentrating on upgrading my Dansco 7160 Walkers with certified examples @ GSA and have much better luck. The raw coins are few and far between. Definitely a roll of the dice Thanks for your reply.

She's had a rough life. I'll revise my guess to VF Details - Scratched. Definitely a Spiked Chin!
