This is an amazing endowment you are creating TB, and I join the others in saluting your generosity.
Your decision to 'pay it forward' to future generations of Wildlife and Fishery Science students is a very thoughtful act of kindness.
I'm proud to know you at the CCF.

Beautiful set and a wonderful gesture to endow a scholarship. Best of luck with the auction!

And N.S.S. if you're ever back in town look me up as I moved back after living all over the world for 20 years. Happy Valley is super nice.

Through my years have been to many big 10 football stadiums and will say that penn states is easily the most beautiful. Nestled in the mountains. Worth seeing.

Congratulations on the set & reaching #5. It is beautiful and your generosity for setting up the endowment is going to help a lot of young folks. Kudos to you.
So many great varieties. With a 97+ percent of 585 coins in the set, that leaves some slots unfulfilled. I'm curious which of the missing ones do you regret, the most, not finding?

Just one. I hunt everything I can looking for 1942 FS-102. It's one of the very few varieties that I've never seen in person and have been looking a long time. Interestingly it's not even a popular variety, just super rare, but it's one I still hunt for every chance I get.

Very interesting that it would be that one. That puts me and many others in very good company. Unfortunately, my PC has been acting up this week so I missed part 1 with the wheat cents.I hope it went well.
I'm trying to view and participate in part 2. Best of success in the last part of you auction.

How did the initial sale go? Hopefully it met TB expectations for funding the foundation.

Thank you for sharing that link to the results. It was enjoyable to browse through the pages and examine in detail these amazing coins from TB collection, and view how the market valued them. As I expected, the 'normal' trophy coins (1909-S VDB, 1914-D, 1922 No-D, etc) sold for considerable sums. I was really pleased however to note that TB focus on rare varieties provided the sales highlights - and appropriately so given all the work it took to acquire them. Two that stood out to me for their final hammer price: 1942 S/S, RPM, FS-512, PCGS MS67RD. $6050 1955 DDO-001, MS64+BN/CAC. $8000 I'm curious about TB reaction to those prices. Expected? Disappointment? I once again salute your efforts to fund your educational support foundation.

I was out of the country for a while so mostly out of touch. But now back and can comment. The wheat cents, broadly, split into three categories. The early wheat straight coins did somewhat poorly with some really good deals for the buyers. The later date straight coins did very well with even MS66 coins going well above expectations. The varieties did as they always do with some killing it and some going cheap. You just can't predict which coins will be in demand at any given moment. But overall the varieties mostly did well with a few going really high and a few going for well below their value. End result was the total sale came in around what I expected. The moderns sold very well with the same variability on the variety coins. A number of them set auction records while some just never got any traction at all and went quite low. The straight coins consistently beat expectations, which is great since there were a ton of non-variety fairly low value coins in that auction. But an extra $10 or $15 per coin across 250 coins adds up. Overall the moderns far exceeded expectations.
At the end of the day the auction brought in enough to fully fund the endowment for the scholarship! That was the goal and it was met, so I am really, really pleased with the results. All the legal paperwork is already signed for the scholarship so it will be funded as soon as I get the sale proceeds. Penn State tells me that this will be early enough for the first scholarship to be awarded this fall.

Thanks for the update and breakdown of how the auction went. I was really surprised any sold below $30-$40, since that is about what it would cost to have them slabbed.
I was able to participate in the last one and was very pleased and surprised with some of my winners. I'm patiently(?) waiting for them to arrive so I can enjoy them in person. It's good to know the endowment can start as early as this fall. They will be some fortunate students. TB, it doesn't sound like you plan to slow down much, so ... best of success in your future pursuits and challenges.

Your auction is a really great resource for varieties.
Does anyone have a link to the TB part 2 auction results?
