Then I'd say it's something to do with the die which struck this coin.

it does look like a filled or worn die as to worth it is very limited but some people do pursue it . what you can do is put it in a 2x2 and collect any errors you come across. they can teach you alot by studing how they happened an so on..

Hi laxmaster

The coin looks like a struck thru grease ,,the date is not the only affected area, the field and the motto is also affected.

These kinds of coins do not have much of a value maybe .25 to .50 cents.

Do you have a pic of the reverse ?

The coin looks like a Grease Filled Die to me. I would classify it as a III-K-4 class error a "Strike Through" according to Alan Herberts PDS Classification system. He calls it a Class 1-4 rarity and assigns a value of 10 to 25 cents (over normal value) provided the coin is Mint State. He assigns no value to a worn coin - because of potential circulation damage.

If you notice part of the motto - specifically WE TRUST is also effected as is a small portion of the field. Likely a blob of grease fell into the coining chamber.

Here is a picture of the reverse. At the top it looks like a large grease spot. What do you guys think and I think in the middle

The lettering also is something to look at.
IN GOD WE TRUST the e trust looks different than the rest of the bold lettering.

Your right Toast. I'm lloking at it now. The E is smaller than the W. and RUS is very light. Does this make the coins worth any higher?

I also have a quarter of the same kind of error.
I do not remember which words are missed.
But I remember that it is the last several letters of " IN GOD WE TRUST".
And these words totally disappear.

Now I am on a business trip, when I go back, I will also take a picture and upload for all of your reference.

The only Grease Filled Die strikes worth anything much are far more obstructed than this. I used to search mint rolls of Quarters and quickly stopped saving them. This is a much more common occurance than you might suspect. It happens more often than Strike Doubling.

Please see my State Quarter which is of the same kind of weak die.

IN GOD WE TRUST
LLAR of "DOLLAR" fades.

Grease filled State Quarter issues are a bit better than the older version because there is more interest in the State series. Your example is one I would also keep.
