My first thought was VF-20. I guess I'm a bit more on the strict side, eh? Possibly dipped, but I dont see evidence of cleaning. I like the date though. My type coin barber is a 15-d...:-D

I was actually tempted to give it a lower grade at first as well, but I've seen a lot with the flattened reverse in higher grade slabs than the detail looks...meh

Harlan J. Berk classified it: Quote: Barber 50¢, 1915-D, VF35, Lightly cleaned I liked the details of it and thought is was close enough to XF for my 7070. This is a tough coin to get with good details, (I have found anyway...) I think HJB grades their coins very fairly, sometimes even undergraded. In this case, VF35 seems like a reasonable grade to me.

FYI, here is an 1894-S Barber half graded VF-30 by ANACS, in an old, small holder. I think this one could have graded higher if it weren't for that dark spot on the reverse by the eagle's left (facing) wing. Nevertheless, this coin clearly has stronger detail and less wear than the 1915-D. I think HJB was just a tad optimistic about the detail grade although they were correct about the cleaning.

Jaobler. Yours has MUCH stronger detail imo. I would have thought XF-40 on yours, especially with the strong liberty and full wing lines on the reverse. VF-30 was harsh.

I agree Johnny, XF-40 minimum and many would call it 45.

Wow! Thanks Jaobler! I think your coin is VASTLY under-rated!
I also see now that mine was generously awarded a VF-35. (However, I still like it!) But I see now that my estimation of it being close to XF was a bit optimistic. (Though I still have not seen it in person.)
Jaobler! I think you should get yours re-graded! I think you would be pleasantly surprised...

Send her in! Nothing beats making some bux from simply a different holder.

One more reference point: this 1900 half is graded EF-40 in another very old, small ANACS holder. This one IMO is properly graded. Since it has only a trace of luster in the protected areas I don't think it could qualify as a possible EF-45. I don't plan to re-submit the 1894-S at this point. I really do think that the large dark spot on the reverse contributed to the conservative grade. Maybe I'll give it a shot if I ever need another candidate to round out an "Economy" submission for PCGS. Thanks for the comments!

I've seen darker grey coins with that detail graded EF-45 though, so I wouldn't be surprised. This one is nice, too.

It looks like a nice VF35. Cleaned a little bit though. Still the Barbers are good looking coins.
