Quote: Oh, and I seem to be collecting ex-wives, too. How does one collect ex-wives? In my experience, the ex's don't gather together to socialize with each, nor do they all reside in the same place (particularly mine).

My wife says that there is a fine line between collector and pack rat. I have always seemed to start collections anytime that I would wind up with multiples of something of interest. My main interest prior to his death was Dale Earnhardt stuff. (I have a chest full of die casts, pictures, caps, newspaper articles, cereal boxes, etc.
My coin collecting began as child with my grandfather. I do not have any "high end" pieces but I do have a large variety. My two sons that are still at home also have an interest and we go to local shows and clubs from time to time.

well I went to the card show today and I controlled myself I only spent a little over 100 dollars because I wanted to save up for an upcoming coin show. the funny thing was there were three tables that actually had some coins and one had currency but not much. all way over priced
there were about twenty coins and maybe thirty bills total and I think I spent more time just looking at the small amount of coins and currency than at the thousands of cards at the show.
if I had any doubt which I didn't whether I liked coins or cards more it is gone now I just couldn't stop looking at the coins.

Very nice! Quick question, what's the difference between RS, SS, and Z28? I've actually seen one or two cars like mine that have "SS" AND "Z28" on the side. Is there such a thing, or did they do that themselves?

I collect GI stuff, US military WWII especially USMC. I have also my stamp collection of Spanish Philippines and US Philippines and it's almost complete (10 stamps to go), so I don't spend anymore for that collection as the last 10 are really very rare and very expensive, if you can find them. I don't throw away stamps even the new ones. I still cutout stamps from envelope but they are in a box til I get again the stamp bug. I have my antiques mostly heirlooms with a lot of family history. I would love to have vintage cars or motorcycle for my collection but no space here in Madrid for that kind of collection.

When I was a kid I started with rocks as well because I did not have any money and every one was different. When I started to get an allowance, I started to collect sports cards. Over time I started to get into comics and the sports cards went to non-sports cards that also went with my comic book collection. Then when I was in college, I started to collect Star Wars toys and different memorabilia. Over time the collections have grown and shrunk in many different ways but still stick around when we move. I started coin collecting as a kid just because I was given a Lincoln Cent and Dime Whitman folders by me Grandparents. I filled them in no time at all and they went into a drawer where they were forgotten about for years. Every now and then I would pull them out and look at them but never had an interest in collecting them. That was until I became an adult and moved to a smaller town with not that much to do. I was driving around town on my lunch break and found a coin store by accident. I started going there about 1-2 times every couple of weeks and never bought anything because I was more amazed at what variety of coins there really were and I felt that I was more in a museum than a store. After a few months I found my old Lincoln Cent Whitman folder and decided that I wanted to collect the entire series. I am not there yet (just 6 shy), but I do have multiple sets going at once along with Indian Head cents, Large Cents, Silver Eagles...you get the point. The funny thing is, that over the last few years I have started collecting casino coins and chips. It started when I wanted a cheap souvenir and then wanted one from every casino I visited. The collecting has moved on to others in my family and we started getting them for each other when ever we go somewhere new. After reading through this post I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on how to sell some of my old collectibles, mainly my comic books and cards (and I do not want to use ebay). The comics are mainly 1980-1995 and consist mostly of Marvel mutants and the early Image titles which there are probably about a total of 5-600. The card collection is in three parts: 1. a box of 5000 cards (mainly 1980-1995) and are broken down to about 3000-4000 that are baseball and football with the remainder non-sports cards. 2. Some smaller completed sets of football, basketball and I think one group of hockey. And 3. a binder with a lot of promo and special cards for non-sports and sports alike along with a few autographed cards. If you could click on my profile and send me an email I would appreciate it. I would rather see these go to someone that would appreciate them more than the dust that is collecting on them. Also, if you live in Utah, I would gladly set up a time for you to see them.

Quote: I've actually seen one or two cars like mine that have "SS" AND "Z28" on the side. the SS is a hopped up camaro with a ram air hood that was first offered again in 1995 or 1996 (which gives it more power) they also have a LS1 engine instead of the Lt1 the z28 has. The Z28 had a little over 300HP and the SS was pushing close to 400 from the factory pure stock. The SS is a real bad car and has allot of performance parts straight from the factory. (from wikipedia) The SS cars, which were modified by Street Legal Performance (SLP) through contract with GM, were the highest factory performance Camaros offered at the time and included a functioning hood scoop and new five-spoke 17 in (43 cm) x 9 in (23 cm) wheels. The new wheel and tire package on the SS resulted in better handling and braking compared to the Z28.

I used to build model aircraft about 4 years ago and just got back into it about a year ago and I will have alot of money for a coin but I will see a model I want and just buy it. It does get frustrating. And somtimes I will have to pass on a model I want if I am going to a coin show.

Interesting thread. There are a lot of car guys here, so I'm in good company.. I've don't "collect" cars, but I had been heavy into modifying my current car and understand the passion. I have a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. I kept it stock for about 2 years, and then went nuts...swapped out the cams, exhaust, injectors and installed an AFC and boost controller. Then I went with a bigger turbo and a larger bottom end with a bunch of supporting mods.....it was a lot of fun but just ended up being a money pit. I still use it as my daily driver, but I've done some road and drag racing. It dynoed at 400 hp to the wheels, but I rarely use that kind of power with it any more since I rely on it for daily transportation. What really sold me on the evo to begin with was the outstanding handling. I've always liked camaro's and vette's...FUN STUFF! As far as collecting goes, I got the gene from my dad. He has been a hardcore stamp collector for years, and dabbles with coins occasionally. I also used to collect baseball cards, and still have most of my collection. I have sold a few on ebay, but it's a bit discouraging when a Willie Mays goes for $15. The market has really hit the floor with cards, so I figured I'd just keep what I have and maybe someday they will pick up again. I was also into comic books, especially early Amazing Spiderman issues. I still have a few of those, but my main passion by a longshot is coins.

Cool thread! Thanks Bryan1315 for pointing this topic out to me. I also like cars but stopped when I ran out of garage space and my wife ran out of patience. Then I started coins. (But I kept the cars!) We talked about those in a General Discussion post. https://goccf.com/t/48499#48499

At first I collected stamps but tossed coins I liked into a jar... I moved from stamps to sports cards, still tossing coins in a jar. After sports cards I went to collecting slot cars. They were more fun to play with than sports cards. After that I took the coins out of the jar and started sorting them, organizing them and actually spending money to acquire more coins.
