I think you are right Wheezy , people keep them just because they look cool , kinda like the old Buffalo nickel. Its the only reason I keep them.Buffalo nickels were the first coins I collected so it seemed the thing to do , add some of these to the herd. Its an area where I've done zero research nor taken photos for comment.Im sure one of these days when I get around to that I'm going to be in for a few surprises. Most of them were given to me by an old timer collector, never been out the rolls, same with Mercs. It gets to the point theres so many its impossible to find that kind of time. I know I know..what a nice complaint to have , there it is though.

I still see quite a few and have put them aside in the past. Now I just pull the Denvers. Here in NC, they are harder to find.

I work at Baskin robbins. I can tell you- these are in no way rare or uncommon.

My first reaction to this is "is he kidding?" I have been pulling all the westward journey series nickels out of my rolls and stashing them in an original "westward journey" nickel bag from the mint. I must have $20 or more worth, and hey, a pretty good percentage of those are Buffalo. I even found a "speared buffalo" die crack specimen (woot!)

I dont think the post intimated these coins were rare , uncommen perhaps which would seem true enough in some areas. The number one reason why has been mentioned and confirmed , people tend to keep these bison nickels..is it hoarding..dunno.I do it too , they are too nice to spend when a tatty old jefferson will do.

I think its wild how some specific coins will circulate pretty heavily in one area and almost be unseen in others in cuirculation

Quote: My first reaction to this is "is he kidding?" No not kidding, it's just a commentary on how little turnover there is in coins where I live. It has taken four years for a bison nickel to work it's way into the area. (I know they aren't rare and never will be. Ten percent of the entire mintage was sold by the mint directly to the collectors. The only nickel with a higher percentage of the original mintage surviving in Unc is the 50-D. With maybe the 2009's coming in third.) And in the past seven years (since 2002) I've only found 15 nickels that date later than 2002. (Total Westward journey nickels stands at 8 coins.) I also keep every 1997 nickel I run across. (We had a competition on Compuserve that year to see who could colect the most complete nickel set just from pocket change, no roll searching.) I've kept every 1997 nickel since then and in 12 years I've found 15 of them. Everything else from the 80's, 90's, up through 2002 are easy to find, but not the 97's and nothing after 2002. I still haven't found a Hawaii quarter and only one each of the rest of the 2008 State Quarters. The only President dollars you can get are Washingtons, we haven't seen anything else. The local bank ordered a box of Washingtons and still has most of them. When they run out, they might order another box. During the entire ten year run of the State Quarters we only got one shipment of quarters in, Massachusetts.

Bicentennial Quarters and Halves are not rare either by no means but how often are they found? They are (WERE) sitting in drawers and jars.

Being from Eastern Kentucky I went through the same thing. I was going through $100 dollars of nickels a day and took me over two month to get all the Denver mint nickels. I did find 6 "Real" Buffalo nickels which was nice !!
