I must have misread the response to my question
about these.Is it the 1979s or1879s .Do they even date back that far?I'm lost.sn31.

SBAs were first minted in 1979 at the Philly and Denver mints. SBAs were also produced at the San Fran mint but I dont believe that these were meant for circulation, just collectors. San Fran also produced proof SBAs which are only meant for collectors. Proofs have a special mirrored surface with cameo design. I hope this clears up your confusion  Edited by biokemist6

San Francisco did in fact mint both proofs and business strikes in 1979, 1980, and 1981 (though in 1981, no SBAs were released for circulation, they were only put into mint and proof sets). The 1980-S business strike SBA is the last coin San Francisco ever minted for general circulation. More SBAs were minted in 1999 in Philadelphia and Denver to fill demand for vending machines and to test the weight and diameter of the new Sacagaweas (which were intended to be compatible with machines that accepted and dispensed SBAs). Philadelphia minted some proofs that year that were sold separately; the 1999 proof sets did not include them. |

The San Fran 1979 and 1980 were circulation business strikes? I never knew that, I always thought they were mint state collector issues. My dad has been getting and spending rolls of SBAs for over 20 years and he has never found a S mint SBA except for a 1979 proof that somehow made it into a roll  Edit: I just checked the mintages, with almost 110,000,000 1979S SBAs minted they had to have been business strikes  I am going to have to tell my dad to look at them a bit closer. It would be a good Idea to put a few of these coins away, since they are due to be discontinued with the Presidential dollar coins. I believe that the very high MS and the clear S varieties will be due for a jump when this happens. I know I posted to this thread when it was posted originally ? Rick Edited by Metalman

a Sac dollar and a SBA dollar is two different things. The person who wins the 1000 member giveaway will get 20 UNC SBA's from 1979 because that was what I sent in for my offering to the giveaway Edited by Bryan1315

I actually like the proof sac Dollar coins, Thats a pretty one Hangokid. To bad the the circulation strike coins look so bad after a short time !! They discolor very rapidly when handled. This coin will continue even after the Presidential dollar coins are released. Rick |

A circulated SBA is worth a dollar. That is, if you can convince a clerk that it is a real coin. I have several near-perfect BU SBA's which would be worth a little more. Just yesterday, while in a coin store, a guy brought in several SBA's to see if the dealer would buy them. The dealer sort of laughed, and said "Sure, I'll give you a dollar each." |

I have bought a few circuatled rolls from the bank just to have some. (the banks only offers mixed rolls, SBA and Sac's) I kept a few of the nicer ones and have had a time of it trying to spend the others. No one wants to take them without a long explanation of what they are and what their worth. Last Time I visited my dealer I bought a few proof sets for $6-$8 just to have the proof SBA's. I figured it was the only way to buy them for a resonable price. The proof's SBA's are very nice, the circulated ones, even though they don't get much circulation, are not pretty. [:0] I think it's a good idea to discontinue them. Even the Sac's, which I do like, seem to be almost impossible to use as legal tender these days. I wish they just made them a little bigger, I think folks might have taken it more seriously. Margaret |

Your dad must be unlucky, biokemist. I picked up a grand total of two SBA dollars in change when I went to the States with my family in 1983; one of them was a 1979-S.
