I'd agree with RFB with the exception of #4 & 5 being very close in grade.

I'm pretty new at this, but I'll weigh in by agreeing with Moe145.
The last one is the strongest. The second to last one has a little more wear on the bottom curl and the top feather. That makes the last two EF 40 and EF 45 to my eye.

Nice coins

Yeah--I'd want all of these, no matter the grade!
Photos don't tell everything, but based on what I see.
1. AG03 (I don't see distinct rims)
2. VG8 (signs of corrosion from the feathers through OF AMERICA )
3. F15+ (poss. VF20)
4. VF35 (ribbon looks barely connected to hair)
5. EF40 (ribbon distinct, but diamonds are not complete)
(I've based my grades on Rick Snow's guide)

Here are the PCGS grades on the slabs taken off Heritage
Are we better IHC graders than PCGS?

Without the reverses, this is an impossible call.

Coin no. 1 must have a very nice reverse because the obverse is not close to G06.

It's been my experience that IHC grading is weighted on Liberty's details--barring problems elsewhere.
How can an IHC be graded AU53 if the obverse details are XF40? Snow's notes on grading, linked above, chiefly rules by the obverse.
You're certainly welcome to disagree, but from what I've seen, the collector market grades/buys on the IHC obverse--barring other problems of course!

As one example, I'll post the "G06" reverse. It doesn't change my grade; you're welcome to find the rest on Heritage.
I won't make this thread needlessly long.

Wow! If I were to sell that #1 IHC at G06 $$ raw, I'd be laughed at. The reverse is a G06 but that obverse is an AG03 all day long. This is where grading becomes subjective. If you are going to purchase a coin only because PCGS says it's an XF45, then you are buying the holder and IMO, your foolish. The major TPG's are opinions. That's it.

Thinking further on this one, the reverse is better, but that doesn't change my sentiments by much.
It's odd how slabbing gets the attention off the coin, and onto their printed label--what does that say about TPGs?
Imo, none of the coins above merit the market value as graded--even if the reverses are better.
As you suggest--the true test is breaking them out, and then offering them for sale.

This looks like a good example of "market grading" on a key date.

If these IHC were dated 1887, I'd venture a guess that the assigned grades would be 3-5 points lower.

I chose 1877 deliberately, because a few points difference translates to a lot of money.

I have posted my grade already, so not agani. I just wanted to comment on the info I read recently, in the "Professional Red Book". They stipulate that the diamonds are NOT taken into consideration when grading. I bring this up, because I am seeing more, and more mention of them, and their condition. I wonder what Rick thinks about them? IO personally don't use them for grading. The only thing I check foer in that generalm are are MPD's.
