Have been away for a long time from the forum. Will try to come back on a regular basis again. But will not be easy with a small baby.

I'm back? My internet time has been severely diminished by work, and I also got addicted to Facebook games. ><

HAHA. I know just what you mean. World coins are to me far more "real" than the coins of the US that have huge mintages and horridly inflated values.

But the term "darksider" is not truly meant to be derogatory, rather it is in reference to the saying that "most collectors in the US know as much about world coins as about the dark side of the moon."

I love your explanation, it's very precise and logical.

Yes, I have been wondering what a 'darksider' is. I have never heard the term before, and I thought it was some type of medieval coin.

turtleoverhead- Well, believe me, while the term "darksider" is not meant to be derogatory, I have met quite a few dealers in the states who are appalled by the notion of someone collecting world coins. In fact, once I was at a show and asked a dealer if he had any kind of stock of world coins and he said "why would you want any of that garbage?" Oh well, more for us who love them, I suppose!

I am proud to be a darksider, I find the history behind the world coins I collect to be what has kept me interested for all these years. I have kept all my US coins I collected when I was younger and I occasionally pick up a new US coin that interests me but it's the hunt for the world coins I want that makes it all so fun.

I started collecting while I inhabited the Eastern hemisphere, and as a "darksider" I included some US coins in my collection. I still hope that US will eventually consider itself a part of the world.

Guys, I still see less traffic in this forum compared to last year's. It makes sense that people are busier than before given the economy.

I am of the very same mind. I love world coins since they have so much history and are actually scarce in the US since someone had to have transported them to the US.

I totally agree. The US is just another country of the world, so in a sense all numismatists are "darksiders."

And of course, Darksiders can collect coins that predate the existence of the United States

There's that Hello Kitty avatar again! Nothing dark side about the kitty.

I'm spending more time browsing cgb's auctions than anything else lately. And I picked up my first coin from the Toulouse mint a month ago. A shabby, common date Napoleon 5F, for pocket use.

When somebody uses the term "dark side" (or darksider), I know it does not refer to me or my collection. It may make some sense from a purely American POV though.
