I got £200 in 50p coins from the bank yesterday and these were my most interesting finds - my first ever 2022 Shield reverse 50p...  ... I found 14 commemoratives but they were mostly fairly common ones, apart from this - a 2011 Football 50p, the lowest mintage Olympic 50p...  It's quite unusual to get Olympic 50p's in circulation these days, and I've seen the Football coin, even in circulated condition, selling for up to £15 on ebay!  |

Hiya. Just remembered something. NumisRob's AU Penny reminded me. Over the whole issue of the portcullis 1p there was a die variety where the rivets in the portcullis were a slightly different profile. There were other varieties in early decimal coins too, like the face and mane of the 10p lion, and details in the 5p thistle. Not only did business-strikes vary, but some proof and BU examples did as well. I've not seen these documented anywhere either. It may have had something to do with the Mint preparing for when they changed the size of the coinage but I never really researched it. Oh well, is this a rabbit-hole I see before me?

Spyro - there have been quite a few articles about these varieties in coin magazines. One very clear and quite scarce 5p variety is the '1980 Proof Reverse', which has longer and more exaggerated serifs on the letters of the words 'NEW PENCE'. It's the reverse used on the 1972-9 proof coins but 1980 is the only date you find it on some circulation 5p's.
On the subject of varieties, I've noticed one already on the 2025 £1 coin: there is an edge variety similar to that found on about 1 in 20 2016 coins. On some 2025 £1 coins, the date is immediately adjacent to a milled segment on the edge, and on others it's adjacent to a plain segment. I'm not sure if the variety also applies to 2023 pound coins: every one I've had so far has been the same.

That's interesting. I was going to try and put a couple of pics up showing what I meant but it seems I need a new clip-on lens for my phone. I'll see what I can dig out from older pics and post them up. Not this week though - far too busy with DIY at my son's house!

Hello again NumisRob. Thanks for the info. I've just had a quick look through my decimal one pennies and found a couple from 1994 (Maklouf) that may be of interest. They show the differences in the rivets on the portcullis. From 1971 to 85 they all have simple bosses, then up to 1994 both types exist, but after that they all have the incuse ring, except for 2007. I'll look into what you said about the serifs when I'm back from my busman's holiday.   |

Here are a couple of small 10p pieces. The shinier one is 2008, the other is 2004. If you look closely you'll see distinct differences in the dies. The easiest place to start is the jawline of the lion. (I wonder if the Mint hired two separate lions to pose for these?) The differences are more noticeable on the older florin-sized 10ps, and also on proof and BU examples. The differences in the thistle of the Ironside 5p are limited to the larger older ones.
