I also mean no disrespect for any member asking questions on this forum. I do agree with Chuck however that multiple questions about the same coin from the same poster can get somewhat tiresome. If you remember a couple of months back I was personally berated by a CCF member for asking the question "What are you trying to show?". This response has been given sincerely many times by those of us trying to help by asking this very question. The individual that attacked me has left this forum, although he still posts on another one using a different name. As a final note to the thin skinned among us, chill out! This is supposed to be a FUN learning and social network.

If everybody took time to do all of the online research for every coin before they asked a question then this forum would be pretty dead.... We also have to consider that not everybody is a coin expert let alone Lincoln Cent specialist. Then there are also differences in eyesight and learning abilities. I know there are some things that I see one time and pick it right up and other things that take several attempts before I really get it. I welcome any questions from any member on the forum, I just choose not to reply to some of them.

one thing about online, you can't tell by the tone of their voice like you could if you were face to face when they are joking around. Some people aren't that good with writing down words so they don't get taken the wrong way. I have been in this situation many times where I was trying to make a funny and picking around but when it was read by some members they took it as a personal attack when in fact it was just said in jest but since all you do is read the comment and cant tell the expressions of the person its hard to tell if they are serious or saying things in a jokingly way

i should probably not comment but what the heck im kinda on the fence with this i got hooked on coin collecting and varites about year and ahalf ago and this was the first board I joined and mr daughtry and others was very helpful and at times got me confused at some of the responces I got and if it was not for chuck I would have got more confused.like the thread about the 1917 DDO that I found that turned into a yes it is no it not and it turned out it was but I could have tossed it back in the pile . but I have not posted alot on here any more because of the silly answers I was getting (looks like lincoln has the mumps)and I'm one that was on here to learn but then again you should be able to post what ever they allow you post and you are right you don't have to reply to the post. maybe they should have a section for people that want the real answer to there questions.like the ones chuck gives and others that is kinda of topic I know. but I'm on the fence not that it matters so don't beat me up just my thoughts co

When I look at photos, I can tell the difference between large and small dates--1970 and others. But one doesn't usually seem to actually be larger than the other. How does one come to be labeled large and the other small?

Everyone has had their say, including me, and reading thru the whole thread, I find one small bit of help that is not mentioned. That it: If the "7" is below the imaginary line drawn across the tops of the 970, then it is LARGE. I use this method, and am right on every coin I have pulled to check. I make this point, because I am legally blind'. It can't get much simpler than that. I see some complaints about coppercoins, posts, and I think they are out of line! I have had as much trouble figurinf out which variety I have in hand, and ask if it is susc, and such, BUT I also make notes to help me remember, so as not to be a big pain! This is only one of the forums I belong to, and I see a lot of sarcasm directed at Chuck, and others, and without good reason. Like Chuck says, if you just can't gey it thru your head, even with notes, pictures ate, maybe you shouls collect something else. The choice is yours. Dick

I just see it as, if you don't want to mess with answering or get tired of answering the same question over and over again to the same person, then don't. Don't post at all, let someone else handle it.

livingdinasaur, I appreciate your consideration for Chuck. No doubt that he is an invaluable resource and asset to the forum. However, the criticism about doing your research before asking a question can be pointed at most all of us. You authored on 1/13/10 a question with "Euro dollar : US dollar" asking what the conversion rate was between the two. It appears that you brought your question to the forum to be answered by friends before researching it. I googled "euro to dollar" and received pages of immediate answers to that question. You received 4 or 5 very courteous answers giving both the current rate and where you could locate, on line, calculators for this very purpose. You were not nuked for asking it. That is the point. On an open forum as this, there will be questions and answers that we disagree with. We can either choose to answer or ignore them. There is nothing to be gained from hurt feelings and discourse filled with vitriol.
It may be that the questions about the 1970-S cents could have been posed in a slightly different manor that would elicited answers without frustration. If the author would have asked "there seems to be somethings with the first coin that make me suspicious, any thoughts?" we would have had a interesting analysis about how age and damage can make Iding hard for some. I still find that first coin interesting. I learned from Badthad, I believe, that to him the tail of 7 on the small date seems different and appears shorter than on the large date and this coin seems to have that appearance. I booked marked the topic so as to check back in and see if it was discussed.
It probably took longer to take and load the pics of the coins than it would have to research. Perhaps this was more a question looking for conversation than anything else. It is not hard to smile and be a friend, try it, it feels great. Jim

Bio, I am in complete agreement with you regarding the obligation on the student to make the effort to learn. It sounds as though some of us have already become frustrated with the number of posts on the same subject. Knowing this, why would you even open it? If everyone just leaves it alone, the poster would eventually learn that the well can run dry. If you open it knowing that it will inflame you, it would seem you are looking for a reason to become upset. There is simply no reason to be short, rude, terse or caustic with anyone. Jim

Hi All, The basic reason that I have not posted much recently is because I've seen the same questions over and over again receiving the same answers over and over again. I still like to respond to something new and I like to respond to Subjects that actually have a question in them. When I see a question like, 19## S, what do you think? I slip right past it. When I see a subject like 19## DDO, I sometimes look. If I see a bunch of people that say it is a DDO when it obviously isn't. I cringe and go on. I am too busy right now to get into disputes over what is and what isn't. When a newbie asks a question, I like to Help. When the same question is asked over and over by a person that has been here awhile, or I see responses from people that make very little sense (and some of those folks have been around here long enough to have seen the subject thoroughly discussed before) I have to wonder what's up... I've seen some folks that have learned a great deal give the proper answers to many of the questions so I don't often hop in to say....(Fill in a name) is right. If the right answer is there, I move on. Folks that have a particular question for me have been emailing me questions so I am still here but not here , at the same time:-) I've also been buried in working on updates to my own websites. Anyway...I'm here...sorta....but it is tougher to spend a great deal of time here right now. For those folks that are really learning about these subjects, my hat (if I wore one) is off to you! To those that ask the same thing time and time again (NOT The Newbies, you are all OK) the Search feature here is really excellent and there is likely an encyclopedia's worth of information already here just waiting to be searched for. Thanks, Bill
