I used to report the posting of forgeries to ebay all the time - without success. That is because ebay will NOT take a position on whether a coin is a forgery or not. Specifically I was reporting DANGEROUS fakes - not the obvious ones like the ones this fellow sells. What happens is that ebay contacts the seller - the seller says they are real (any fraudulent dealer will) and ebay simply makes no decision one way or the other. The auction runs. If the seller is not in the US - ebay looks at legality in the location of the seller and does not even bother with the contact. That is why Chinese auctions survive so often. It is only recently that ebay has begun to look at the legality of importing items. ebay needs to insist on CORRECT DESCRIPTION. Counterfeits (legal ones) and replicas should be able to be listed as long as they are properly described. Illegal counterfeits should not be allowed.

Scubu - I reported every one of these that I knew was fake before I posted my original link. I also emailed the seller, telling him they were fake. He basically said too bad, and ebay did nothing to stop the auctions. So, yes, I am one of the one's on here complaining, but I did take my far more than 30 seconds to do something about it.

1. The only fake coin I ever bought, was on ebay. In fairness it was 1998 and a lot of the safeguards were not in place. Now that they are, see how well they work? Its almost unconscionable. 2. I placed for sale a 1809 Half Dollar and made the huge mistake of saying "AU50" in my item listing's header. My auction was pulled 24 HOURS before it ended, because you can't assign numerical grades to an uncertified coin (?!). They couldn't email me and ask me to correct it? I had 3 watchers and 1 bid. Disgusting. Bruce

perhaps when the eagle eyes of the members here find a fake, perhaps the forum can send in many many complaint's to help the ignorant save there money, more importantly, get ebay to recognize there is misrepresentation going on here....and can ENFORCE there ruling by that instead of a fake....which they seem to not take a stand....I have been luck to get a few removed...but there are to many for one person alone to get it done, perhaps when MANY object to a listing they will act.

So, AT LEAST three of us reported this guy's auctions, and e-Bay let it go through anyway? Nice.

You must use the CCW link like in my signature. You also need to include an explanation, you can't just say "This coin is fake" and expect them to take your word for it. If there's an explanation or photo comparisons here, send a link, they will look. I get auctions pulled on a daily basis very easily. They act very quickly if it's properly reported. During the week, a lot of times, within an hour.

Quote: You must use the CCW link like in my signature. That's exactly how I did it. Although, my info was probably not complete enough. Now I know. Thanks Quote: I get auctions pulled on a daily basis very easily. Really? Why?

Here is an example of an auction that involves the notorious 1882 Zs Chinese 8 Reale. http://cgi.ebay.com/MEXICAN-8-REALE...300397884239 This one is so obvious even in a scan that it should be obvious to anyone that it is fake. I will write to the seller asking him remove the forgery. If he fails to reply - then I would ask scubu to see if he can get the auction stopped.

I just cam back here for a re-read and realized that I miss read scuba's last post. I thought you meant that you auctions were getting pulled. You mean you are getting other auctions pulled, right?

The seller has replied and has agreed to remove the forgery. Quote: Hi Bob, Thanks for the info. I had no idea. I just thought the 1882 was in better condition. I'll cancel the auction and get rid of the fake. Regards, John This is the best way to get results and determine if the seller is an honest dealer. I prefer not to get auctions canceled by ebay except in the case of fraud. Honest mistakes are not in the same category. I would prefer a direct contact by another eBayer as opposed to a "cancellation" from ebay. It has happened to me - always some trivial little detail in wording that "violates" some ebay rule. Instead of a friendly warning you get a termination that costs you MONEY. When they cancel an auction you forfeit fees - even if the auction could be corrected by changing two or three words.

I just found a new seller (rating of 3) selling 4 counterfeit Mexican coins for starting bids of $10 each. One is the 1882 Zs 8 Reale - the really bad one from China that "likes magnets". http://cgi.ebay.com/OLD-MEXICAN-COI...110496239789 Any smart buyer will see all the red flags on this one - NEW SELLER - 2 Day auction - awful looking coins of the Wrong Color - a BAD origin point - but with a NO RETURN policy and obvious junk fakes - the seller is a most likely a simple FRAUD. However, he could be an innocent victim of a TJ trader. The coin has a 2 day posting - so it is unlikely to be stopped in any event. I wrote to the seller as always to inform him and sent my email address for questions. If he does not reply I will assume he knew all along and then I will turn him in but I can guarantee ebay will not stop them. The 8R is blatantly obvious as a fake - the other 3 are just a bit more subtile BUT they are a group that always appears together. Just watch the Chinese sellers for a while and you get to know the groupings. Check his feedback and you will find a satisfied customer for an even larger group of fakes. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...110492759494Too bad - but as ebay says - "Let the buyer beware" - a real shame.

He just included the fact that he was told they were fake so maybe he's innocent.

That is two for two. I wish I got results like this all the time, but I usually do not. I would agree with Halfwitty - honest seller who was duped.

Well, the results of the last auction - the one involving the WORTHLESS Chinese fake 1882 coin - are in. It sold for $17.05 even with the warning that it was a FAKE. There were three different bids higher than $10. I guess it confirms a simple fact - people will buy anything! I have at least a dozen identical coins that I got free - perhaps I should sell them!
