The 82-D pictured lastly is a plated cent. You can see the orange peel effect on it. Probably zinc. Post mint.

If that 83 is an accurate 2.9 grams that leans toward copper. but ?
Odd one.

I don't think the 82D is plated ... I think it's the light reflection from my lamp ... no sign of copper color peel/bleed through on naked eye, but I might be wrong. I need to take the cent to a dealer and have it weighed (I don't have scales)

The all zinc cent's are very soft, it is the copper clad that gives them a little hardness. The last one is a zinc only as the texture is a spot on match.

The 82 D is plated. The top coin in the thread is known as "brass" plated. it is not copper. It is a known error type. When the copper plating material was contaminated with zinc, the result was a brass plating rather than the pure copper plating. The colors can vary from bright yellow, to goldish, to greenish.

Some folks collect these and they have traded in the past for more than 25 dollars each. I'm not sure what they sell for today.

Do a search for brass plated cents.

Have Fun,
Bill

Thanks that would explain the hardness. where any of them over plated giving them a higher weight?

If it is silver it should be a little under weight and be all zinc. I sold one of the 1883's I had for 50.00 (Note I scratched the side and disclosed it in the sale to make sure it was not just plated.)

I have a 82 and 83 that are part of my collection.

All the rest in this thread is just distracting fluff. The important question is, what are the chances that the OP 1983 cent is struck on a copper planchet. At 2.9 grams it would be seriously overweight for a zinc cent, but slightly underweight for being a copper cent. But it is closer to the copper than to the zinc. I can't say for sure, but I think this coin could be a serious contender for being a 1983 copper and it is worthy of further examination.

I good with that. How do I do that?

I spoke with J Dixon at the US mint I know I am misspelling this but. She told me that the US mint struck 1 centsimo's in 1982 and 83 and that they where 3.00 gram bronze planchet's. If and it is a big if! there was a planchet left over jammed in the feeder and came out or became un-logded when striking the US pennies. If this is the case it's underweight.

I am leaning towards the comment of one of the guy's that it is a heavy bronze plated. I do not wish to damage the coin but I am close to taking a scribe and scratching the outer edge. Silver inside bronze plated! Gold-ish inside Bronze

No I have not scrached the coin !!

Just to add some additional distracting fluff, I finally weighed the 1982D ... you guys were right, plated. Weight came in at 3.19g, so .08 over. This cent was pulled out of circulation ... and to think I've been holding it for a number of years ... for nothing ...

Dont worry man thats what this place is for so you learn and dont purchase stuff like this. If anything keep it so you know what plating looks like, when you run across another one

Sometimes it's difficult to really see the color of these , but the 1983 D cent up a little bit looks more like it could be a genuine cent struck on an unplated planchet.

Thanks,
Bill
