Before I will answer, is your coin slabbed by a major third party grading company? The picture suggests your coin may be cleaned which would significantly reduce its overall value.

It is in the top 100 Vams but it is only a R-4 on the rarity scale so not really a premium as an R-4 is by the numbers is listed as tens of thousands. I thick it's an AU coin and in that year the CC mint put out 2,212,000 coins. I do not have that one.

It's not slabbed....and I do not know if it has been cleaned. I should note that I do not own it but am considering buying it. I hadn't even noticed that it might be cleaned.....good point though.
I have found out that the best way to collect anymore with any coin that is more than $25 or so is to make sure they are already slabbed by PCGS or NGC....kinda like buying an antique car - you usually get better bang for the buck if the work is already done.

That's true...I never thought i'd be able to buy a CC morgan, but I can buy a BU 78-CC for under $300..maybe not ms65 but 62-63. I'm a sucker for the 1878-79 coins. And I saw a 85-CC NGC MS 65 the other day went for abt $600 the 78-CC is on ebay......here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWAX:IT

I just don't know its MS. It is real by the pup's. It is a nice VAM 300.00 sounds a little much as I would have to side with Ozland on this coin has been cleaned. I think the coin is an AU-58

Robert's guide puts the availability at rare. In June of '09, an update on this VAM cut the previous population in half, making this a sought after coin for collectors. You did good, nice job!

I just checked my VAM up-date that LVA completed Jan 21 2010 it shows a Vam-24 and 24a and are now listed as a I-4 in interest and R-5 on Rarity. If you like the coin you did well. If you are looking to get the coin graded use ANACS because even if the coin has been cleaned they will grade it with details and John is there Attributor and as (SOLID OF A GUY AS THE COME)

not sure if I will follow up with it or not.....I have gotten finer tastes as my income has allowed, so I'd rather have a coin that grades w/o problems. Just a personal thing, I guess. Of course, I can always keep looking - just have to find the good stuff before you guys do!
I did find a 79-s B reverse about 4 yrs ago....xf-45, i'd say...got it real cheap. But it's not a CC, if you know what I mean.

I have about 80 GSA CC's they are nice. But there are many of non CC's that are very valuable and more so the just a CC mint mark type coin. I want the type of VAM on your posting just not that one. If you are collecting for the resale value (ONLY) make sure it is a (4) or (5) on the (I) scale "Interest" you can have something rare, but if know one whats it then the value will be lower. If you are collecting because you truly like something "get what makes you happy" The real full is when the two come together!

I dunno if I'd be so quick to pronounce that coin as cleaned. I've seen a lot of Morgans with vertical die polishing marks, especially '78's and '79's, like so: And, although ANACS has 40-some of this VAM in AU, they've only graded one in Mint State. I might have to risk a few bucks on that chance, if the coin were mine.

now that explains why I've seen so many of these looking like that.....I just assumed they were all cleaned, and have passed some of them up for that reason. It's just so tough when you aren't looking at the coin in person, ya know? I'm so used to using my loupe that it's tough to spend the $$ on an uncertified coin of decent value without seeing it better. Seen too many coins that are passed of as BU when they are really between 53-58....and overgrading is rampant on ebay.

When I am buying raw coins, I prefer to see them in hand. This way I can tell or not tell if they have been cleaned. I am old school in that I believe once a problem coin, always a problem coin.
I once read (although I cannot quote the source) that likely 70% of raw coins sold on the Internet are problem coins of one type or another. Coins that have been cleaned, over dipped, whizzed, counterfeit, tampered with, improperly stored and artificially toned.
