They vary from $5 - $10, so anywhere from $2.50 - $5 after the half off. I'm going down there tomorrow and will search them more closely, I just didn't have the time to do it today(imagine a coin collector not having time to search through half off proofs).  |

Seems like a pretty decent deal as long as they are not impaired. I'm building out a full set of Kennedys and I'm being very picky on the proofs. I've seen lots in half off boxes that have a couple of spots on them. I've passed on them and tried to only buy gems even if it means paying extra. In the long run I will be more satisfied with the higher grade coins.

Ok I am back from my coin haunt and this is what I picked up in Kennedy halves: 1967 ( Red Book has 67 Kennedys in MS-63 only but this coin looks PF to me)Asking $15; Paid $7 1968-S PF Asking $9; Paid $4.50; Red Book $7 1969-S PF Asking $9; Paid $4.50; Red Book $7 1970-S PF Asking $12; Paid $6; Red Book $15 1971-S PF Asking $4; Paid $2; Red Book $6 1973-S PF Asking $3; Paid $1.50; Red Book $5 1974-S PF Asking $4; Paid $2; Red Book $6 1976-S PF Silver Clad Asking $7; Paid $3.50; Red Book $8 1977-S PF Asking $4; Paid $2; Red Book $6 1978-S PF Asking $3; Paid $1.50; Red Book $5 Total Asking Price was $69.00 Total I Paid was 34.50 plus tax. Some idiot inherited their grandfathers proof sets, cracked them open and took the Kennedy's out and placed them in cardboard 2x2's. |

SMS (special mint set) coins were minted from 1965-67; business strike coins that were handled more carefully. Yes, if an SMS coin is still in great condition, it does look nice. I have to get solid coin holders for these. I don't trust the cardboard 2x2's, especially since one has a tear in the cellophane on the obverse and I don't any of them getting scratches.
I was having a hard time not drooling while searching. I still can't believe it.
Once I put these into hard coin holders, I'll get the pics done.

I would pick out a couple that look really nice with no flaws.If you can get some to grade 67 or above IMO it's worth the cost of grading.

To get a MS67, you might want take a gander at your halves under at least 5x magnification.

They are not worth grading unless you can pull down a PF70 grade...and the chances of that are not very good. You can pick up slabbed PF-69 Kennedy's on ebay for less than the cost of having these graded, and you'd have 2 of each coin. |
