I think I'd have to draw the line at dateless, much less acid residue. I see it as a cheap way to get kick started. I've always liked them, just seems like there is always something else on my list before I get to them. I get sidetracked really easy. I go shopping for Lincolns and come home with ASE's. Or, I'm looking for a particular Washington and come home with an Indian head. How does that happen?

It is reasonable as long as they are full 4 digit dates, some mint marks, and not all from the mid-late 30s.

Thanks for the tip, biokemist6, I'll try to target pre-30's w/mm's.

I agree with the group consensus above .... Spend some research time to know the basics of value for Buffalo's ..... then buy a few and post them here. Say you buy 10 ..... cost you $15.00 ..... geepers .... you can easily spend more than that on a 12 pack of cold-adult beverage tomorrow. Show us what you end up with. David

Sorry about the delay, worked longer than I thought I would. Had to actually take lunch at 7PM to get there before he closed! Yup, I work nights. Anyway, picked out these 4 for $5. Big spender! I don't think it was too bad. Some of the mintmarks may be hard to read, so clockwise: 1928P, 1930S, 1935S, 1936D. Sorry, I broke the mid to late 30's rule, but these were the best of the bunch. Of the remainder, the dates were legible but really worn flat - wasn't sure if they were worth it.

I guess the reverse on some of them look to be a little bright. The more time I spend on this forum the less I realize I know about coins!

They look original to me, I think the top two reverses are brighter due to lighting. Nice Pickups. Now the big question is how long will it take to complete the set... I just love Buffalo nickels and am currently working on a complete certified set...It is slow go right now since I am focusing on my type set...

Lighting was definitely an issue. The bottom two are better looking than the photo. Must have been the angle, but I'm still unclear on the cleaning. If they are, no great loss at a whopping $5, but I would still hope not. I really need to learn that aspect of collecting. The Buffaloes were more of an impulse, which I'm really bad at. I think that's why I can't complete a set! I'm only a handful of ASE's from finishing, all 2000+, and in the back of mind (I think) "Oh, I can get those anytime, look at that Classic Head half-cent!" (So, now I gotta have those!) Now, I'm hooked on the Buffaloes! When does it end?! (Well, never, I'm sure, but you know what I mean).

I agree that it appears to be lighting and not (obvious) cleaning. This is just my opinion, but I would not worry too much about cleaning on circulated coins unless it is an obvious and/or harsh cleaning. My rule, which I only apply to the circulated grades, is if I have to ask myself "Has this been cleaned?" then it probably should not matter what the answer is. Overall eye appeal is much more important to me. There is just too much that can happen to a coin that has been in circulation, I cannot worry about it all!
