Sometimes they get pretty tall as the die chips out more and more. The dies in the 50's were way over used and fell apart gradually but didn't get retired soon. That is why we see the dies fallen arches showing during these years.

I found this chip on a 55-S as I was searching my current stash. Nice big chip between B and E.

Nice BIE! Thanks for posting!
We need some of you vets to share a few variations with us that have only heard or read about. Like a IIBIE!

Are the BIEs worth anything other than the "awe cool" factor?

From the way I understand, they were the craze back in the day and may have commanded a few bucks, but now they're just cool.
If there were someone out there trying to put together some kind of BIE set, they might be interested in it, but I wouldn't think it would go for much.

The problem with collecting them is that the die chip/crack gets worse with continued use. So you might have several examples of the same BIE and they could look different from coin to coin.

You have to watch him, Scooby. I think he has pics on all of us, too. Rumor has it that the pic of the three youngsters is of forum members. Jim

Too funny, Jim! The creepy baby dancing always tripped me out to begin with.

I wouldn't have a problem with that! I think it would be cool to see the progression of the chip.
