Joel,
I can see your frustrated. I think it is hard for me and others on here to to really understand your motivation. Do you need the money, so your going to sell a collection that someone close to you spent many years to put together and decided to leave it to you. Or do you just have no interests in coins and want to be rid of them. Most of us here, are here to learn more about the hobby and share our collecting experiences with each other. And as far as selling on here, the rules recently changed and it is no longer 2 weeks and 50 posts.

That is not to say members on here do not want to help you so you don't get ripped off.
Most are happy to help you. I have tried my self and it seemed hard for you to stay focused.

If you really want to sell your coins, you have to know what they can sell for.
To me the best way to sell is not all at once.

Number one thing you need to learn/find out .. is what the value of the coins are.
There are three groups of prices. Dealer prices, online/Ebay prices and selling to a collector prices.

You need to take one set of coins at a time, figure out which coins are common and which will bring more when sold. Do not jump all around, separate the common from the better coins, then move to the next set of coins.

Common coins can be sold anytime you want and all at once, of course you want to know what they are worth. And that the price of silver changes everyday, so you could get more or less from one day to the next.

Common silver half dollars, quarters and dimes will sell at melt value. For example you might get $12.00 for every one dollar face value. Common silver dollars may bring a little more.

Common circulated Lincoln cents and Jefferson nickel do not bring much above face value.

If I was selling your collection. and if I needed money, I would sell the common coins first.
Then take my time with the more collectible coins. For example: I would take just the 1921 D Walker
into all the local coin shops in my area. I would have a pretty good idea what the grade is and why.
I would then ask what they would give me for it, and ask to see what the buy and ask prices are for that coin to make sure their offer fall close to the greysheet prices. Understand you will not get the price dealers sell coins for, they have to make money to run their business, so their buy price will be much less. Of course I would let them know I have more key coins to sell and who ever gives me the best price will get my business. Good grade, key coins are what dealers want, in my experience taking them in one or just a few at a time will increase what you will get for your whole collection.

Thanks for the advice goldrush. I guess I can understand that you don't quite get it.. truth is I'm a college kid, who definitely could use some extra funds to support other hobbies as well as everyday living.

Personally, I have a minor interest in the collecting hobby, and I had voiced that i'd like to start collecting Peace dollars on my own... but I have a larger interest in other hobbies, which is why when I stumbled upon this collection I thought it might be nice to sell what was valuable and put the funds toward something that I personally enjoy more. My reasons behind joining this forum were simple, I thought if I asked a few questions to a couple of people more experienced than myself, I could gain a bit better knowledge of what I had, and how much it was worth, as well as hopefully sell to someone who would enjoy the coins the way I'm sure that my grandmother did.

Please forgive me if I came off as a rude kid just trying to ship off his grandmothers collection as quick as possible, it was not my intention.

To me it is neither good nor bad, just easier if all is understood. (and that is just my opinion)

As you can see this is a long post, because there are many here that would like to help.

Also remember there are dealers here on this site, I am not one of them, but saying something like
".. I figure if I get ripped off by a dealer" might offend someone.

But I am not here to tell you what you should or shouldn't say.

I would really like to give you some help so that you won't get ripped off. And best way to do that is to figure out what a good price for your coins would be. Anyone can rip you off, if you don't know what they are worth.

That's true. I think I have a better understanding of what my coins are worth, what grades they are in, what key dates they are etc, but unfortunately nothing can really make up for experience in the hobby when it comes to knowing how much they actually sell for.. I can look up a price on PCGS or Numismedia for a date and condition my coin is in, but I don't know how accurate that is, and if I'll be able to get that for my coin...

i guess my current plan is to try and see if I can unload the bulk silver at a dealer, and shop around the key dates a bit more like you suggested, seems like a very reasonable approach.

I really think that is the best way. When the dealer said he would rather buy the whole lot, all he is saying is it would be best .. for him

When you selling like this you want to be in control of the sale. When you separate your common silver and know the dollar amount you have then you will know what you should get before you even get to the shop. Let's say you put together $50.00 face value in silver. You could call all the coin shops and gold and silver buyers in your area, and ask what they are buying silver for. They will say 10X .. 11X .. or 12X face .. or something like that. You could even ask if would be a better price if you are selling $50.00 face. Either way for $50/face value at.. 10X face .. $500.00 .. 12X face .. $600.00. This way you would know what you get before you even leave the house. Of course if some of it is silver dollars you would ask what he is buying those at. Circulated silver dollars might sell for $12 to $14. AU/BU Morgans a little more for common dates. Better date Morgan and Peace dollars would have to be looked at individually. These prices are what I am seeing in my small area. It could be more or less in other areas, and of course if silver price change .. will be different numbers

Joel A... GoldRush is giving excellent advice. And don't be discouraged because of the new rules - not only are they beyond our control, but it might even be fortuitous in your favor - it may push you to expand your ebay horizons and maybe even get more money for the coins you do choose to sell right now. If you have some left when you hit your 90 days, I'm sure we'd all love to you see your posts in the BST section

The ebay grading-in-your-title rules came about because of, roughly, the same thing - someone (many someones, actually) abused their rules. So they had to change. Just make sure to read their rules now that you know there are some, take some great pictures like you have been, and you should be good to go on that. And we're all here to bounce ideas off of or to give a rough grade on something you might not be sure of!

By those 'other hobbies' I hope you don't mean those yukky girls. They'll get you into trouble every time!

roughly 85 dollars in silver face value.. that's only the 90% silver coins... so not including the 1965-1970 Kennedy's, (didn't count my 64's towards that total either) also not including 40% ike's or 42-45 Jefferson nickels... also have a few proof morgans, barbers, and franklins that weren't included in that count.

So I guess i'll pull out the key dates, and examples that appear to be in better shape then the rest, and get another face value count.. then i'll see what dealers in the area are willing to pay for bulk coins at melt value..

At least now I have an approach.. should have gone about it this way from the start! Thanks for the idea Goldrush.

plus what kind of a con artist would even wait 2 weeks and build up 50 posts to sell on a site where he'll likely get less expose then ebay? I could be wrong, but that would seem out of character to me if it was someone running a scam and just trying to make a quick buck.. it would also be out of character to try and sell to real experienced collectors instead of trying to sell to novices on ebay.. but those of course are just my opinion

I'm very new to this site but I really like it here because people are friendly, intelligent, and trustworthy. It's a family atmosphere, but the trust must be earned through familiarity. I haven't seen it, but apparently problems occurred so thus the policy change.

If you decide to sell some or all of your coins to a dealer, get multiple offers. Any buyer needs to break down what they are paying for individual collector coins and bullion rather than a lump sum for the whole package.

to the forums Jerry! I hope you enjoy it here! It would probably be best to start your own topic in regards to this question, as the current discussion on this thread isn't related to modern commemoratives.

Thanks I've already tried to modify my profile That didn't work. However it did flatter me and says I'm 13yrs old. I wish at 58. 13 is the amount of times I have to try and remember My wife's Name on a daily basis.Still I'm really curious about my last question on the coins. Jerry Thomas

Jerry - if you look at the very top or very bottom of the page, there is a pink folder labeled "New Topic" - that is what Johnny is referring to. Your questions are valid, but they should be in their own thread, not in this one... =) If you'd like, I can quote you and start the thread (topic) for you - that way users will see the new topic and pay your question proper attention! :D But I think you should give it a shot!
