echizento- thanks! I am really happy with this purchase since it has been a while since I have found an 8 in a decent grade and at a reasonable price.

Nice coin if it has been cleaned, who cares! It's a great coin with lots of history to it. The best part is that YOU enjoy this.

Yes its a nice (very fine plus) Carolus IIII. Had not been to the weak strike at 1 - 3 o'clock of the obverse and plus-ultra of the 2 pillars, it could easily go for an EF grade in my opinion. It is a lot nicer that my coin. How reasonable is the price Archraz?

Nice 8! I agree with Echizento, doesn't appear to have excessive hairlines or any harsh scratches. Nice coin and I like the slightly off center strike look which accounts for the weakness in "Dei Gratia". That is not wear, it is strike. I give it a solid VF and would be proud to have it in my collection. The wear on the hair and clasp keep it out of the EF range. Excellent addition. Are you trying to assemble a specific set? By date? By type? By mint? Cleaned 8's have never really bothered me as long as they are not "damaged". These coins are 200 years old, and have passed through many hands. I am like you, I buy them because I like them, the coin appeals to me and my "buy price" matches my desire to have that specific coin.

Pandesalapi- Thanks for the input! To be honest, I only paid $20 for it! My local dealer is seriously too good to me. haha

jfransch- Thanks! There actually are some noticeable scratches around the base of the left pillar and the "X" of "REX" on the reverse, but they don't bother me too much. I just collect 8's by date and mint. I just love the design and the history associated with them. Whenever I find a real one at a reasonable price I snatch it.

Wow, it's really way below at its normal price. Mine, I got it at $125 5 years ago. You really have good dealer...

$20?!?@!#?!@# I would have jumped on that in a nanosecond... I would have probably jumped on the dealer and through the wall as well.

I have always wanted "pieces of 8".

I am still retrieving my picture files of my 1795. I'll post it asap
What I can easily post now is dated 1803 Carolus IIII. Notice this 8 reales on its reverse side, it has die break I guess from 12:00 crossing the coin vertically down to 6:00. Coin was also cleaned with not so nice appearance.

Pandesalapi- Very nice even though it was cleaned! And I must say that that is quite a die break. It looks like that die was about to snap in half after only a couple more strikes. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Great die break. It would be fun to search out another 1803 with the same break at a different stage of the crack.

jfransch- That would be quite amazing to find more from the same die. I just wonder how many are actually out there in this day and age.

Yes I am also interested to look one at the different stage of die break, I chosed this coin because of its difference from the others aside from the vertical die break. It has a concave field surface of the reverse.
by the way, jfransch' 1795 Carolus IIII is also a beauty.
We are like pirates, we all really love pieces of 8 !

Hey, guys, can anyone help me identify this Carolus IIII coin I got? It seems to have an "TS" or something alike instead of the "Mo" and it's from the year 1795, also a value for it would be appreciated. I'll leave the link to the post here.
