It must have been those Leprechauns.
It must have been mix in with those gold coins .. in that pot by the rainbow. That caused the odd golden color.
And when the leprechauns found it in with the gold coins .. they put a spell on it .. that makes the front and back different sizes ...

I'm with Dave, it looks like what I call a "natural cleaning". That is, it was cleaned, but probably not intentionally.
