I don't like it when a coin is cleaned and they do not state it before the purchase and you find out the hard way.

No one's mentioned colorized and plated coins? Or those full-page newspaper ads that want you to invest $89.99 for a frame and a couple of rolls worth of quarters? Or descriptors on Craigslist that start out with "ancient old ..."?

Mine is "Improperly Cleaned" coins. This is a big problem with circulated 19th century silver U.S. coinage. Many people like their coins white though and there's plenty of sellers willing to oblige.

The fakemasters of China and their ever-expanding repertoire of coins they can fake and sell on ebay, and ebay's refusal to simply write off China as a lost cause.

1. I totally agree with you, Sap! The problem is that these fakes are all over the place now. Even shops in malls, which specialize in "exotic" or "oriental" items, often have tons of fake "fat man dollars." Fakes just make me so mad.

2. Dealers who mock you for buying dark side coins from them. You would think that they would be happy to make a sale and would hope that I would buy more from them in the future. In fact I have had some act in quite a hostile manner to me. One time I bought a coin from Mughal India, which was labeled as "unidentified Arab." After paying for the coin the dealer then said to me "what are you, some kind of [*ethnic slur for a person from the Middle East*]?" Needless to say, I never went within ten feet of his table after that.

3. Having to hide/ turn backwards all of my coin books on my shelves when the cable guy or other unknown people come to my house.

4. Negative stereotypes about numismatists, such as that we are horribly anti-social or that our interest is nothing more than some sort of obsessive compulsive disorder.

Is being horribly anti-social with an obsessive compulsive disorder a negative? Going by who and what I am, I just assumed they were universal. I need help....

1. I know nothing about coins and am trying to sell my (Father's, Uncle's, Aunt's, etc.) coin collection. Not sure if worth anything
2. I have here these UNSEARCHED coins. Never looked at by anyone and all are Wheat back cents, from 09 to present, in almost new condition.
3. Don't know why everyone makes such a fuss about cleaning a coin. I do it all the time with (lighter fluid or Lemon Juice or Molases or .....) and they look great. And no one could ever tell they were cleaned.
4. I have this coin dated xxxx and a mint mark of xx. Here is a photo. Is it considered a G4 or better. Then naturally someone has to say "Not worth much"
5. Someone post here about a coin and 500 replys later no one knows what the subject was.
6. The stupid, dumb, rediculous slots in Albums for the Lincoln 22 plain, 55 Double Die, 72 Double Die, etc. Same with a slot for the 3 legged Buffalo nickel. I've even got an old Whitman Folder with a slot of the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel and so far never found one in change.
7. So you collect coins? Man is that dumb.
I guess I'm really getting old. So much of this stuff used to be funny.

When they make "coins" in a shape of guitars, or motorcycles, or animals ...
Just saw a set of motorcycles "from Somalia" at a different coin shop. Very low quality stamped the affiliation and the denomination on the reverse - really, it's a lapel pin, not a coin!

Decided to double-check my sources and came across this stuff. What's next, bubble-gum coins?

Your-Coin-Pet-Peeves?

I hope I won't see them in the "Coin of the Week" thread!

Also, I'm only 25, so I'm not your typical customer in a coin shop.. I hate it when I go in somewhere new and basically get blown off to any question I have because they dont take me serious

Being 18 I can relate. Whenever I go into a shop I try to act like a total newbie to see if the dealer will try to take me for a ride or simply ignore me. If so, I just walk out. I have found my small circle of trustworthy dealers this way, and thus weeded out many of the ones who are disrespectful and/or dishonest.

People used to tease me about stuff like that in High School until they realized how profitable it could be!

pattiewhack- Yep, it can be hard to get some dealers to take you seriously if you do not seem as though the stereotypical numismatist. I certainly have my share of stories from when I was a young collector.

So the best way to overcome this prejudice is to be armed with knowledge, which you acquire here on the forum. That should make any dealer realize that you are serious.

Calling something "unsearched", like wheat cents. Well how would the seller know that term unless they know a little about key dates? Obviously they've been searched for key dates and the buyers have been taken. Everytime anything changes hands it gets diluted a little bit. But "unsearched", that's a huge misnomer. If it sounds too good to be true, walk away.

Counterfeits. In any way, shape, or form. (Particularly ones in counterfeit slabs).
