Ya got anything better to use the freebie on? Didn't think so. Go for it!
As an aside; when regrading do they use the old serial number or a new one? Do they 'retire' the old number if a new one is issued?

PCGS guarantees that they will not downgrade coins sent in for Regrading (as long as the coin is submitted in the slab.)

Thanks for the encouragement ...... and agree with nolawyer .... it will not come back as less than MS67. Anyways ..... my quarterly special is a complimentary re-grade into a Secure Plus holder ...... so this lovely Antietam goes back to PCGS tomorrow for that second look. Still will cost me $24.95 in return shipping/insurance. I tell you with all honestly this coin is undergraded by every measure I know to apply. It is the only Antietam I've ever seen with absolutely full brilliant proof-like cartwheel luster ..... and not a speck of toning anywhere. The visual combination makes it impossible to put down ........ looks like it came from the mint yesterday. It has a hammered full strike with none of the weakness often seen at the top of the Burnside Bridge ..... heck .... I can see the individual leaves on the reverse side trees! On the obverse the detail in Gen. Lee beard is so fine that it appears cameo in hand. With my 10x loupe I can count 3 very minor bag marks on Gen. Lee face and nothing on the reverse. Thrilled if she comes back MS68 ..... which makes this a $8100 coin (current Numismedia price). I'd be very happy if she came back MS67+ ....... and no loss but the return shipping if she comes back as she is today. For the record I purchased this lovely for $1100 at a BIN auction on E-Pray. Not counting on the bump to any higher grade ...... but at the minimum I'll be able to share with all of you a coin in the new Secure Plus holder. I'll post the results in about a month or so. David

The chance of getting it back higher is probably low given the price difference, but if you think it honestly has a shot, I would send it in 30 times if you have to because of said difference. Though, PCGS might have ways to detect this...

Nikelsearcher, pulling for you to get an "8"! Quote: Though, PCGS might have ways to detect this... Yes, since he is submitting it under "Secure Plus", they would know any time in the future if that same coin is submitted to them again. Allegedly that is part of the "value" they are adding to a coin submitted under the Secure Plus service.

A value increase should have no merit when a coin is being graded.....if it does...then the system is a joke......Good luck on an upgrade.

Well ..... this coin made it home again after the 'free' re-grade into the new holder. Here is the result .... a new holder but the same grade .... PCGS MS67. I'm a little bummed .... was sure it would grade higher ..... but this is still the absolute finest Classic Commemorative I have ever had the pleasure of owning. We can now answer this question ... Quote: when regrading do they use the old serial number or a new one? Two different serial numbers indeed. Thanks to all for the encouragement you gave me in this thread! David

Quote: Two different serial numbers indeed. Interesting. So if this had been the single highest graded example, would the POP report now show another one exists, even though you have the only one? If so, that's not good.

My experience in this re-grade leads me to believe that PCGS has this issue covered Bobby.
The Population report still shows the same number of MS67 coins as before I submitted for re-grade.
More significant ..... PCGS updated my Registry Set with the new serial number ...... so they unilaterally made the move to exchange one coin for another at re-grade.
Great question .....

coinsrfun, I agree with you, but unfortunately its the way the system works. They're more picky with handing out upgrades when the value difference is high.
