Yea, I just kinda realized this budget in the last few month, since I just got out of the military and got a new job.
I keep leaning toward focusing on a Type set... I don't know why, there's just a lot of appeal for me. I was thinking of doing a Key Date only Type set... but yea... I dont have a $100k to complete it. LOL

That is a very nice budget! Why don't you do a LMC and Wheat penny date set by roll searching; you could also add nickel roll searching. This would give you a nice side thing to the 7070, and you would end with 3 completed sets, 2 for basically face value (cept those killer keys)

I've been working on a PCGS 20th Century Type Registry Set and I've enjoyed it. With your budget, you could probably put together a great looking all MS set in a few months.

Quote: I keep leaning toward focusing on a Type set... I don't know why, there's just a lot of appeal for me. Then that is what you should do! You should always collect what you like. Focus on the type set; do not worry about anything else until you "hit a wall" (as you say). I would suggest Standing Liberty quarters, a nice lower end circulated set can be completed for under $5k. Then again, I am a bit biased.

Maybe you should consider doing a 20th century key date set. Start with LWC's and progress through the denominations. With a $500-$1,000 budget you can get most any key date with the exception of the 1916 SLQ. This way you are getting proven "winner" coins that will hold there value and most likely continue to appreciate. I would recommend sticking with certified coins though if you go this route.

I like to do these, they are challenging to put together , work well on a budget, and more than one can be worked on at a time.

I would do LMC and Jefferson.. except that I already have a nice set. -Wheatie keys. and for me jefferson I found a 50-d in circ... so I did one of those too, completed. and I have a complete Washington quarters. LOL I think ill do the 7070, and roll search for silvers... I bought $1,000 in quarters the other day, it was brinks so I searched the roll through the plastic.. found a 64-d. Might just keep up the roll searching. Thanks for the responses. I suppose I could do an additional date set of lincolns or jeffersons. lol

Indian Head cents are beautiful in EF and up. Since this is your avatar, do you collect them? I know Buffalo nickels are a favorite of many here, and challenging to find in higher grades. What about denominations that the mint doesn't make anymore like the 1/2 cent, 2 cent, 3 cent, etc.? The 7070 would be fun, indeed! /Jealous of your budget. /Is a college student.

Quote: Since this is your avatar, do you collect them? I collect them through what I find in my dealers junk IHC bin. most are slightly crusty G - VG. I've always heard that too, that they are beautiful in EF^ Quote: /Jealous of your budget. Well if your major is in Network Engineering then you'll be set in a few years. I didn't go to college, but still. I think week end I'm going to be in the market for an AU or better Type I SLQ, and MS Moderns. Maybe I should start a thread for my purchases. I plan on once I buy a coin, that's it. No up-graders, no hole fillers. Final product in. All I've really bought so far is a very nice MS-65 or so Walker. I also need to work more on my Copper sorter. I weighed my first 6 boxes worth of searches last night, just under 18lbs of copper from 6 boxes. Not bad. also found about 50 or so Wheaties. ^_^ OH! and I bought $1,000 in quarters and found a silver... just a 1964-D but still.

I'd say SLQ, but I imagine it's a pricy set to finish. Another route is to upgrade the coins' grades you have by passing down (selling) some to younger collectors.
