The arrowed item appears to be a die break. A break is the natural progression of a die crack. You can see the crack on the left side of the '1'. The circled item is indeed a die chip.

I traced the crack in this pic.

b17, how about a close up of the mint mark? Appears to be I of the O/Os.

Here are a few more Pictures. With the die break, would it be listed somewhere on VAM World?

Well, there's one advantage here. Only 4 VAM's are listed with the round O mint mark, which narrows things down quite a bit for you. Of them, I like VAM-51 best for your coin. If you can do one of your excellent micro shots of the ear, we might be able to make the attribution firm.

This would be a later die state of the VAM, with the die having cracked. I don't believe the break from the 1 would be significant enough to inspire designation as a subvariety.

Inconclusive, unfortunately, due to wear and lighting. Have a look here:

http://www.vamworld.com/1884-O+Round+O+Reverses

If you were to rotate the coin 90 degrees, we might get something conclusive from the inside of the ear. It's currently washed out. The outside doubling *might* be there, but that's an area which could be obscured by wear.

b17 and SuperDave, I've eliminated 27 & 51 because of date position. 18 also eliminated, no dash under second 8. Mint mark is not doubled as it appears in first pictures. That only leaves 1. VAM 2. Of course this is only an opinion because no date position picture is shown for VAM 2.

The date position is what got me started thinking VAM-51 - it's exact.

Could be Dave. I'll surrender if b17 can get us a clear shot of the ear without the light glare.

Try these shots, I've taken them at a full 360 degrees

Tough call on this one. I see what appears to be some doubling on the inner ear in the first picture. Don't see it in the last three pictures. What does the commander think about the ear? The doubling on the inner ear should be easy to see with the coin in hand.

I'm no expert in this field, as I have only been collecting coin for about a year (Morgans are the only ones I collect at the moment). Comparing this coin to the others I have, I can't see any doubling?

Yeah, I think we rule out VAM-51. By the process of elimination, then, it's VAM-2.

Dave & b17, couldn't let this one rest till I saw a date position on the VAM 2. Went to the bank and did some digging.

Date

Die crack on 1 and 8. Perfect match, just earlier die state.

Extra metal between eagles neck and left wing.

I agree, VAM 2.

Numismatic forensics at its finest. I also agree VAM 2.
