after reviewing the attribution guide for mintmark placement, I have to conclude this is a high mint mark, top of the O mintmark is even with the bottom of the bow. As shown in the attribution guide.. However there are still VAM listings where it is edited incorrectly......another VAM listing may say its normal...
the date is a near date....G

Thanks for your understanding Gene. I couldn't possibly attempt to argue attribution with anyone on vams, but from what I recall (of what I had set in stone in my mind) about these positioning things, this coin is borderline high/normal mm.(Also tilted right, from what I gather from the photo).
As far as the date thing goes, after a second look, I flipflop to near date.

Hi Zeewool, I always like to hear your opinions, they are very perceptive!..
I think Dave is spot on with the VAM 7, you can see the marks in the tail feathers as shown an VAM 7a photo's (same die) also, you will notice that on the vam7 page there are gouges in the mintmark, and your coin has them as well.......

Hummph...I don't go to the site, but I never did have any doubts about the attributions of you guys. I just have my own ideas about what is high and low based upon what I have seen in the past and what folks called them. For instance, compare the coins pictured below:

First the "Low O"

Now the "High O"

Finally the infamous "Horizontal O"

Yoooz guyz are sooo krazy.

Hey, what happened to the mm on my coin---it just moves all over the place ? LOL. I do appreciate all the input and think I'm gonna call it a VAM 7 and move on.
I do enjoy this site and am learning a lot.....thanks.

Worry more about the things which are characteristic to VAM-7, because descriptions differ and images aren't always shot straight on. Look for the 3 lines in the tailfeathers and the chips on the top serif of the I in PLURIBUS.

The most important attribution that a coin receives will be the one given by its owner. I think that Dave has already given you sufficient support in your claim to v-7. (It 'is' v-7) until you, the holder of the coin, show cause to rebut that. If you concur with v-7, v-7 it is.

Much of the research and attributions that a person may feel entitled to should come in the form of request for confirmation rather than a call for a free lunch.

You asked for confirmation of your own attribution, which displays effort and reflects a desire to learn (which is always impressive to me).

As for why your thread took a nose dive into idiocy, the blame falls squarely on me, and I do sincerely apologize for it.

My only excuse, feeble as it may be, is that I had thought that the attribution had already been arrived at pretty early in the thread, and afterward, it was time to get silly. I obviously made an error in judgment.

No apologies needed at all, I enjoyed the moving mm and there is always room for a little laughter.
Thanks to one and all,

One of the challenges we face as collectors - and I'm frequently guilty of it - is taking ourselves and our hobbies too seriously. You don't seem to suffer from that affliction. Nor does sfchemist. I will more quickly unsheathe the Cluebat for the humor-impaired than I will for the jokester.

Well, you know me pretty well Gene. To me it is more about fun and learning than it is about the coins themselves. BTW, where are Terry and Smitty? I was thinking about both of them earlier today. I saw a post a day or so ago that was about 1882 CC VAM 2 and I thought of OZ immediately. I miss those guys, but I have been spending way too much time on this VAM forum anyway for not being a vammer, so this will do it for me for a long while. That is my intention anyway.
Later Dude.
