Buffaloboy5, did someone, somewhere claim ownership of a 1964 Peace dollar? Or are you talking about the article saying they were minted and then melted? Mike

I think he's talking about the April Fool's joke that Bobby posted with the photoshopped 1964 Peace dollar.

By the way, I moved this to the Main Forum.

I think Susan is right, it had to be the April 1 post of Bobby's that fooled some of us. Not sure which thread it was, but it sure was a good joke.

My money's on the 1964 Peace dollar. Over 300,000 were struck, and it's known that a few left the mint.

I said "other"- I have a feeling one of those 1982 (?) aluminum cents is gonna turn up for sale sooner or later! Besides, I've got a monopoly on all of the circulation strike 1895-P Morgans, but you didn't hear it here... [:0] *checks stash in mattress*

I'm betting on the 1964 peace. there were more of those minted than the 1895-P morgan (12,000 business strikes), so there's a decent shot of one of them being in existence. Anybody wanna check farouk's stash?

And who is to say all 1964 Peace dollars were destroyed? Does anyone actually believe that a few of the coins minted didnt find their way into private collections somewhere? Wasnt their a year all carson city minted coins were supposedly melted and none saved yet in the 1950's a few was found in a private collection?

I believe it will be the 1964 Peace dollar there has to be one lying around somewhere that had not been melted. *Put On Sherlock Holmes Outfit* I will not rest till I find this missing coin. The number that were minted was 300,000 as someone has already posted. I wonder if when they were melting them they took count? That would be so cool if the number melted was 299,999lol! I wonder how much that coin would be worth? 5million or more most likely.

Supposedly they did it by weight. So anyone could have pocketed several and threw in common Morgan or Peace dollars to replace them.

That wouldn't really suprise me at all. Those mint employees sure know how to abuse their positions!
