First, let us congratulate nod:
A) for an intriguing puzzle, and
B) for quite an achievement.

I also was in the Air Force, in morse code and crypto-analysis.

This is a straight cryptoquote. To solve it you needed to read it backwards!

The answer to the puzzle (reading backwards) is:

JUST WANTED TO LET YOU GUYS KNOW NOD WAS SELECTED TO FLY FOR THE USAF. VERY EXCITED!

Wow, congrat Nod.

And way to go Scooby. While solving this I was actually thinking about doing one in reverse and it never occurred to me that he had done it.

Aha! I understand clue #3 now.
The faster you go, the further from your aiming point you get.
Going in reverse. Doh!

I feel so stupid.

Well, I can tell you that it wasn't his clues!

I had worked on it briefly over the past couple nights, but couldn't quite focus on it long enough. So, this morning I just started over with the 2 clues *I thought* that I could trust. O=O, V=S.

And I just thought "What if"?

Good work Scooby. Here are the explanations for the hints.

Hint 1: NPD12? The ? is the last gear on a standard automatic car shifter, reverse.
Hint 2: is obviously O=O
Hint 3: is true if you are going in reverse.
Hint 4: if you take the first letter from each word, it spells reverse
Hint 5 is self explanatory.

Scooby, I have a couple different prize choices for you.

No wonder it made no sense to me. All of my cars for the last thirty years (with auto transmissions) used P.R.N,D,2,1. That is except for those with overdrive which have OD between N and D. Currently my truck has an OD,3,2,1 - no D.

The operation of the automatic transmission requires neutral between are and D gears. At least that is what they told me at the transmission plant that I worked at for 17 years.

But all the same, CONGRATS to Both.

Thanks everybody. Great puzzle nod. Congratulations on being selected, I know that must have been a real challenge.

Tough choices on the prizes, but I just can't resist that Barber dime! From one USAF brother to another!

Do we get to see your wings?
