I think this is a love token, or atleast that is what I understand about them. I don't know if this was done a really long time ago or later but I see a lot that look like that.

Yes, I know-that's why I was so confused! I almost couldn't even figure out it was a 2 cent coin. I don't even know what to call it! A counterstamped 1864 2 cent coin? It's like some strange hybrid!

sorry, didn't read you post, forgot to refresh.
I'm not sure why someone would do this, I would think to spread business, but it must have been stamped when 2 cent pieces were in normal circulation, because this could possibly be a rare variety.

ahhh! keep forgetting to refresh!
i don't think this would be called a hybrid (or mule) because it does not have 2 different COIN patterns.
but I guess it could be called a hybrid

I did a search on ebay for love token and I see some similar coins. Not the exact item, but along the same idea. Interesting...

It is a love token and there are collectors for such. It looks like vintage artwork to me. Check out this site, http://www.kenbarr.com/lovetokens.html I bet you could connect with these people for a value. Good ( better ) work on your pictures. I like your token!

Vintage love tokens were hand engraved, not stamped or struck. The ornateness of the engraving can play a large role in the value.

Most love tokens are done on dimes. Of denominations are scarcer and the copper denominations are quite scarce. (There is some thought that the denomination used was a reflection of how much you valued the other person. The higher the denomination the more the person was willing to sacrifice for the object of their affection. What did it say that you would only give up a cent for them rather than a dime?) Since the Two Cent Piece was long out of circulation during the heyday of the love tokens they are very seldom seen. Your token is actually a very desirable item.

2 Cent piece , shaved down to make a personal token of some kind. It's worth whatever someone would pay, but little to no numisnistic value.
