I bought several ATB silver proof sets, might get lucky and see some profit in the future. |

I bought a couple of sets then wait until they start showing
up at Estate Auctions. Most of the time I can get them at a
lower price then issue price. Just takes some patience and
time.

I subscribe to 2, one to open, one to keep. I don't think they are a good buy though, price wise. I am in it for the thrill of filling holes and completing sets. You can get the bulk of the included coins in the lower priced proof set, then just buy the silver coins individually. I just prefer to get it out of the way. I wish they would just sell the silver in a set and leave out the other stuff. IMHO this would be the perfect Silver Proof Set: 1 Silver Proof Kennedy 1 Silver Proof Nickel (I know never going to happen 1 Silver Proof Dime 1 Silver Proof ASE1 or more Silver Proof Quarters (depends on year) Edited by itrooper

I'm buying one for my son who is due any day now. It's a family tradition, each year my grandma would buy all her grandkids an uncirculated or proof set. Which one depended on the finances, but we always got a set through a couple of years ago. Now she is in a home and doesn't have access to her own money anymore... but for many years it was really neat to have something to look forward to every year and I want to start that with my kid. I'm hoping to pass along the tradition, the love of collecting, and one day my collection. Being his birth year and all I'm planning on springing for the silver. I don't think I'm going to buy one for myself though, I'll just enjoy his for the next 18 years or so.  |

I've had two Proof Sets and two Uncirculated Sets for awhile now.....and I recently ordered two of the Silver Proof Sets....then i'll be done for the year.(I think)
I will break one of each for my albums as well......and keep the others.

I bought one, but it's definately no deal. Last year the price was $52 and you received 18 coins. This year it's $57 and you only get 14 coins. This year's set is three pennies and one silver quarter shorter, but costs more. There was probably no need to hike up the price since they're putting less into them other than they want to make more money (no pun intended).

Well, I bought ten sets. It'll be up to my heirs to figure out if it was worth it. If you're just into the ATB Quarters, you can get them for just over $32. $54 is a lot of money for just two extra coins, but it's the only way you're going to get the silver dime and half dollar. Unless you're definitely buying for re-sale, I'd stay with the annual silver set. (Unless you know something I don't, which is entirely possible.) |

I have a lot of customers that buy 10 sets each year, for investment. Some years pay off 1999, 2001, 2004, etc. but most are now selling for less than issue price.
My thought has been to wait, and when they sell for less, buy one or two for yourself, and skip the extras. And with sets that are moving up in price, go ahead and pay the extra right way, they tend to keep moving up, so you can still make some money. Just watch out for the "big fall" like the 1999 sets have done in the last couple of years. Scaling out along the way, make your money, and the couple that you keep after getting your investment back are "free"... then you're playing on the "house's" money.. Always the better play.

That's good advice .....  For me, though, I've never "sold" a coin in my life. I don't play the, "buy a bunch" then move em' when it's hot, game, certainly either. For me, it isn't the profit I might make by buying something.......it's the beautiful luster of the coins as they gleam and shine in my albums.....or sometimes just filling those holes is reason enough!! ...... I just buy what I need/want for my albums, and for future albums or inheritors or whatever I decide to do with the "extras" 30 years from now. It isn't "breaking me" to buy a couple Sets every few months....so I don't really have a lot of interest in whether they go up or down in value. Having said all of that though,........ don't get me wrong !! ...... I'D L.O.V.E. TO KNOW THAT ONE OF MY SETS IS SKYROCKETING IN PRICE ! That WOULD please me very very MUCH ! ..  And I'd hope it stays going up and up and up until I'm old and grey !! ......  ...  |
