Grandma gave me an SLQ in 1956, don't remember what year, but do remember it was a beauty. Traded it to a friend for some of his paper customers - D'oh!

My first old coin was an 1890 IHC that my grandfather gave me when I was a kid, it is now sitting in my IHC album. But, what really got me started collecting was a bunch of Wheats my grandfather gave me a few years later (including my 1914-D), along with a couple of Whitman cent folders. I have 2 kids, and their first coins are a 1998 and 1999 ASE, respectively, that I purchased when they were born. I believe in starting them young

1925 Standing Liberty quarter. It is in G-VG condition, and I bought it from a department store (Woolco's) back around 1980. I still have it, although it is not in the original cardboard 2x2, I did clean it back then as well (I know, I know), I should post it for all to see what "not to do". It has a tone (tarnish) ring around the rim and motto from where I had it in a Whitman 20th Century Folder.

My father gave me a small leather pouch of coins that my grandfather collected while he was a soldier in WW2. About half were darkside, from France, Germany and England. Not much numismatic value but great personal value.

First coing was a FEC that my grandfather found while gardening in probably the late 1980's, early 1990's. It was the first coin I ever saw that didn't look like the standard change and hooked me since. Still have it, unsure of the date due to corrosion and being in the ground for over 100 years.

My first coin that I collected was a 10% off center cent from 1960. I got it as change for a candy bar at a "Howdy Doody" convenience store here in Texas. I was 8 or 9 and thought I was going to be rich. I was sure that it was the first and only coin that had ever made it out of the mint with an error. If ebay had been around way back then, I would have listed it for sale for $1,000,000. As it was, I did have several people offer me a lot more than it was really worth, but I didn't want to sell it. I was hoping to get an offer of at least a few thousand dollars. I started checking to see if anyone else had ever a coin like mine and learned that the value was a lot less than I thought. I sold it for $50 back in '70 or '71 to someone who thought it was worth a lot more. The coin started me off as a collector and set my main interest as errors. They were hard to find back then, but once in a while I'd find a coin with a Cud or strike through and a few off-centers. The next big hit I had was working in a game room when I was 17. One of the kids said he put a quarter in a game but it didn't work. I gave him another quarter and I checked the game to see if it was broken. He had used a saddle struck quarter and it was stuck in the slot. I've had lots of errors over the years, but nothing can beat the feeling I had finding that first off cent coin.

My first coin was a George III penny I picked up in Thurso, Scotland in an antique shop along about 1964-65. Oddly enough, I didn't think of myself as a collector back then but got it just as a souvenir. That's a habit I kept up over the next 20 years or so as I went from country to country while in the USN getting "souvenirs" from each place. Ended up with a passel of em but none really worth anything more than face value. Didn't really get into collecting until late last year when I bought a pair of 1878 Morgans.

Mine was a 1914 dime. Purchased it at a store that bought and sold mostly trading cards.(e.g. Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic, etc) When I bought it, I had thought this was one of the coolest things because I had never seen a coin so old before. I still have that coin.

My first were UK pennys, I used to get the odd good pennys as tips when I did my paper round back in the UK. I still have them. "Crikey" that was 40 odd years ago. They arn't real flash but I kept them anyway. They were worth REAL money back then. 3 or 4 bobs worth of pennys could get you a lot of goodies as a 14 year old Kid in the early 60's in the UK.

How boring my story is in comparison...
I was given a 1999 UNC Mint Set in a mint gift box as a birthday present from my Uncle. Kept it for 5 years before looking into the U.S. Mint product website. I don't remember a specific coin being given to me or going out to search for anything for an album.
