Small communities where everyone knows everyone else and their dogs forever almost means the grapevine is probably very alive and kicking as to peoples characters and actions too I think smaller communites where people do get to know each other and having done business with each other regularly, people tend to be more spontaneous with their honesty and kindness. They "know" each other, kind of like a family, and its more personal. I like that about small communities. More personal.

Thats great your actions earned his respect and trust. Feels good doesn't it? Kind of sad when people are more shocked and delighted by a strangers honesty sometimes than they are about things not so cool.

I sat down at a cafe table one time, pretty broke and was splurging for a coffee. The table hadn't been cleaned yet. I noticed a crumpled wad of money, obviously not a tip, too much. It was about $80 worth. I told the guy at the register someone had left something accidentally and I had it if they returned. A while later a young poor looking couple with an infant came frazzled and charging in the cafe to look for the money and were VERY happy to get it back. It was all they had.

I think someone dropping a 50 in a checkout line is different then a professional selling you
something that isn't what he thought it was
are all the "honest people" out there the ones who would go to the salvation army or thrift store
and pull all the antiques off the shelves for 25 cents and take them behind the counter and say
these should be sold for 200 bucks a piece
my mother has found baskets at the thrift store that go for 100-400 bucks! she spent a few bucks
She wasn't looking just for steals there but when she saw them she grabbed them up
unless you go into a place looking to rip someone off I don't think it's unfair by any means
someone on the "dime searching thread" said they bought something from a coin shop and the guy gave him a silver dime in his change and he went back in to give it back.
The guy told him to keep it, but still I would've went home and put it in my album
I work at a gas station and a convenient store right now
people pay with silver and old dollar bills a bunch, if I see they are short a few pennies I through them in myself so they give me a stack of change hoping for a Wheat penny or something cool
should I tell them to give me something else when they give me something of value? I had a guy pay for something with a silver dime and quarter at the same time the only thing I did was handle them really carefully so they were quiet in my hands and he not hear the silver jingle
am I being dishonest and a bad person that these people don't realize what they are doing or giving me?
how bout the bank tellers
I hear a lot of people being mad that they go through the halves and pull silver or save it for themselves
is that dishonest it is the banks money, but if they buy it out from each other, it's legal
last example
something is priced wrong at a store
true story my friend found a video game that was priced wrong at best buy for 1 cent!!
he bought all of them they had and gave them out to his friends for fun!
is that dishonest
they looked at them at the checkout and "had to" give him that price
should he have just taken them up to the counter and told them to price them right
or bought one for him and let them change them all to the right price
IDK a lot of people like to judge out there but I think if people mess up it's on them
take responsibility for your actions
what ever happened to that one
why cant the dumb person be wrong
why is it always he is soooooo bad for taking advantage of the professional coin salesman/big business/regular shopper/bank going coin searcher
I like good deals as much as the rest and if I had a chance to get the mother of all Lincolns for the price of pennies of its cost, I am on that
just like the 3 legged buffalo story
plus how many people do you think that salesman has ripped off
you think he buys coin lots for a lot of money and sells them cheap to you
heck no its a business
as Ted Nugent used to sing
"DOG DOG DOG EAT DOG"
live, stop judging, be careful, and have fun
take a good deal and believe me for everyone you take you miss probably 10
PEACE
SLASH

Guess we're all just individual in how we think, weigh, decide, and what we do about anything in any given situation at the time and in the end. As I said, I decide as I go, weighing people and the situations. If it feels appropriate and ok to me, I go for it. If it seems like an obvious and important mistake on someone elses part and I know in my heart they wouldn't have let that go for that if they knew, I'm likely to give them a heads up. If it seems like just part of the regular way things are done, 2nd handing or yardsaling I go for it. Whatever. Thats just me. When I live in someone elses body, then I'll decide and live by their conscience for them, but since I don't, I have to live by mine, my own actions and consequences, there's no getting away from that part

I agree with go with what you feel about do what you feel is good but its really funny on this forum that you have people calling you out for saying an opinion (happened to me about a price for something someone was selling)
and they say you should keep your mouth shut about it
Then they tell you a scenario and you put yourself in that position and say what you would've done and you get caled a scum of the earth basically
people are funny
thats what I think
if you wanna live by the "be a good person" thing then do it all the way around
last story
a guy who works at the church where I used to go who I see regularly at work saw kids with a bag of change
they came up to the counter (I was off this day so this is what HE told me)
the kids took change from their parents or something and bought stuff with it
he paid them face for a big bag of indian head pennies, differing 1909 wheats, and old silver and other US coins
he obviously knew this stuff wasn't theirs and if he was this good dude he would've told them to go home and put it back
nope he bought it for face off unknowing little kids
is that right?
be my guest and answer I don't care
whats the difference between that and finding a dump at a bank that was stolen or cashed in because someone needed money
what we do is search for coins and things we want
we get them how we get them and thats that
all of it in some way is pretty corrupt
we technically rip off the banks and our crummy economy by taking something for 10 cents a silver dime instead of offering 2 bucks
sure use your discretion but don't say what others do is low
cause what we all do is just as low

Not so black and white. Taking advantage of a dealer error is not as bad as taking advantage of a regular uneduacted person. Will the dealer give the person from whom they bought the coin more money? What if they walked in off the street?
I go to a dealer and trust him not to take advantage of me, in turn I will be honest with him. As long as everyone gets what they wnat outt of the deal is it ok? Tough one.

Good for you. Honesty is the best policy.

I had something similar happen once. A dealer showed me a 1921-D Mercury dime in an ANACS VF-25 holder. The coin was very nice and properly graded. When I asked for a price, the dealer (a friend) quoted me Fine ask (about half the VF price), since he was looking on the wrong column of the Gray Sheet. I pointed out the mistake, and he thanked me.

By the way, I'd like to say that I don't think anyone at all is scum in here that I've noticed so far ;) Seems like a real mixed bag of people of all kinds of varieties and dates, all interested in coins and money, collecting. It's nice to get to know members thoughts and attitudes and get to know people. I personally like the variety and differences. Like coins, I like 'em all. I like what we're all here for. Coins and money collecting and learning.

Some opinions are out of place and not all opinions fit into the statement of "everyone has a different opinion".

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with buying something at a low price, as long as that's the seller's price. An error is different though and if I were placed in the dealer's shoes I'd feel angry and upset that someone had taken advantage of a simple error that anyone could have made, especially in a situation as extreme as insideout's, In the actual moment I would feel extremely tempted, especially depending on how much I liked the dealer, but in the end I would be honest and tell the dealer he made a mistake. That's just my opinion though and I do understand sides of the situation.

If I were Carl in his situation, I definitely would have taken the 37-D 3-legger Buffalo, especially since I've never appreciated rude dealers.

There is more to this existence than just money.
The grey line of ethical behavior can be debated.

I will say that the times I returned money that fell out of someone's
wallet, on the street or in line at a store, gave ME a lot more happiness than
whatever the cash would have done for me. By far.

I don't think a 1909 S is a simple error. I would bet that 80% of dealers would have paid 1909 vdb price if the situation was turned around.

Take your 09 S VDB and 3 regulars to some dealers and say that someone passed away and you'd like to know what they'd offer for this collection. Granted they might be suspicious if you just brought pennies in... whatever the case.

I still say a lot of dealers wouldn't have said anything.

Well said, and I completely agree.

For me, it's another matter altogether when an experienced dealer misses something. But in the case of this dealer with the S-VDB, it sounds like he's a real gentelman, and the honesty will pay great dividends. It's actually an ideal end to the story, IMO.

Sadly, I think a lot of dealers would back-stab the honest guy the next chance they get. But the best policy is probably to be honest and let others do their job.

(Gotta wonder how that key date would look in your collection, though!)

For me, it boils down to this--feeling good about yourself is more important than $$$.
Well done.
