Treating yourself to roll searching is kind of like the gift that keeps on giving. You can search as much or as little as you want and always have money to take to the bank.

If it was me, I'd look for a pre-Civil War era Seated Liberty half dollar in XF or better. Some of the better dates are available for $100 and they are a good piece of history for the money.

If I had a hundred to burn... I'd get a nice high grade 1883 Nickel no cents (great story) and a 1932 Washington quarter in MS62/63 our AU58 if it looked better.

Hmmm, my latest obsession is Mint and proof sets. LOL

Semi-keys sounds good too.

Band played out last night so I too have $100 in "play" money. Saving mine for the coin show on Saturday :) Though I do enjoy some roll searching I'm ready for a few specifics.

I personally would look at AU Buffalo nickels, say a T1 S mint.

well, all great suggestions! thanks!

so here is my question:

does the price of silver affect semi key or MS graded franklins? I want to get some MS+60 franklins, but wasnt sure becuase if the +60 grades are effected heavily by silver, then I'm not doing it..

this goes for any key/semi key or any coin that is gaded MS 60+.. does the price of silver launch the price up?

SDCoinguy,

I just compared a recent grey sheet with one from last year. It looks like the common date MS63 and lower coins have gone up due to the silver market, but the MS64 and higher coins haven't been affected.

i just want to get my moneys worth you know?

if I get ms60 or ms63, how much have the prices increased for the franklins compared to the overall price of a 64?

As long as silver keeps slowly rising, the intrinsic value of coins will begin to pass their numismatic value, in particular for common dates. However, if silver goes down, you still have the numismatic value to fall back on. So it's a nice double-edged investment.

I operate on the assumption that smelter activity will eventually impact the availability of all silver coins, so I just buy whatever I can as far under spot as possible, since I'm way, way long on this stuff. History seems to agree with me -- see also Franklin halves pre and post-82 silver melt.

so, if you had $100, would you get some MS+ franklins even if melt had effected it?

my dealer offers decent prices. I'm going to check it out today and see what they have and hope its not to much above melt.. but with MS+64/63 franklins, they will hold a premium, $15-$20 wouldnt you say?

Looks like you made your mind up but for $100 I'd get a nice 1909 s Lincoln.
I just love that coin for some reason. I also love unc. Frankins and walkers though.
