I just picked up a partial mint set tonight real cheap because they guy had it stored in his garage. The case was partially crushed, the penny was corroded beyond recognition, and the silver dollar was partially tarnished. I wouldn't get my hopes up to high Scooby.

Thanks rikcando, that's what I'm asking.

I know you get your share of humidity up there and you're talking about a mint set. That's what I'm afraid of. Our humidity is practically non-stop.

I hope it is ok for me to put in my Two Cents ..

I have bought a few collections in the past couple years, a couple were from friends and family.
I wanted to get them as much as I could for their coins and still get good price for the coins I wanted.

What I did was get a good idea what coins they had. Then checked with coin shops as to what they
would pay for those coins. I took notes of the different prices for different grades.
On some of the coins I was not sure of, I went with a low price, but came up with a price they were happy
with. Then I kept the coins I wanted and sold the ones I did not want or already had.

Due to giving the low price, once the deal was done and I had time to go over the coins. Twice I went back
and gave more money. Both times they were really happy to get more money after the deal was done.

In my opinion getting some good coins at the price a dealer would pay, is a fair price for both you and your friend. And if you can work out a layaway plan ... even better.

I do that sometimes with my local coin shop .. they will hold coins or let me pay payments if I am short.

jmkendall,

I always wanted to be the first to do that!

Anyway, You will find some very interesting people here, and although some have amazing collections and pieces, I have yet to encounter a "coin snob". Quality folks at this forum.

Interesting story about the merc's, seems to me the guy was a bit of a fool to keep the keys and bag the rest of the set but to each his own.

When I bought a box of cents near San Francisco while on vacation, I imm ediately noticed they all looked bad. Every one. I believe the humidity is the real killer. Of course, stored in the cheap folders, leaves one side more exposed to air than the other. A recent folder I obtained presented problems with every coin.

Good luck with it.

my 2 cents:

First, after only a year in the storage unit, I don't think that would have added too much corrosion to the coins...as long as it's not a leaky roof, etc.

Also, I had the chance to help an older couple who lives next to me 2 yrs ago when they decided to get rid of their coins and bills....they had mostly common stuff. They gave me a decent deal on it even AFTER I WAS HONEST ABT THE WHOEL VALUE. And, as a 'gift' for going through their collection they gave me a 1917 Walker in XF - guy told me he got it when he was the treasurer at the church and an old lady used to bring a few of them in every so often for the offering. Not worht a lot moneywise b ut I will keep it til the day I die.

LOL - thanks for asking.

He cleaned out the storage shed last weekend and now has a garage full of boxes to go through. The coins are in there somewhere. So, I'm right along with you.

One noteworthy update is that he told me that his uncle died in 2000. The coins have been in there ever since.

So, now we're talking 10 years that those coins have been sitting in there. I really don't know what to expect now. Makes me nervous.

Maybe you will find these coins in a vacuum-sealed air-tight container.

I sure hope you're right jbuck, but I'm not counting on it. He remembers that they were in an album, that the last coin was 2000, and that they were thrown in a box.

I tried to put a little pressure on him by telling him that I had 30 people .
