Where do you come up with these wonderful toys?  AU58 or MS65. This one, I'd want to see in-hand before deciding if it was Mint State. The wingtips, the curled part of the cap, the cotton bolls, and the ear/cheek are the places to concentrate on. I love the coin. |

What? It's not a New Orleans "weak strike? OK...Full luster? Very little wear - maybe on breast feathers. The Liberty looks a little Odd...maybe just the camera angle? I'm at a strong MS64 with a tendency toward MS65. Very nice coin my friend! Now what ANAC or PCGS would grade it? Probably a MS64 just cause!  |

I was lucky enough to catch this one within 30 minutes of it being posted for sale.I don't see many in this condition and year come up. Thanks everyone.  |

Without seeing others replies, the obverse appears as a 58. Possibly weak struck. This is when it is hard to determine a grade from pictures. This date, as far as I know, is not known to be weakly struck, not meaning it can't be. The back looks gorgeous. Looks like a 64+. Going on the Reverse grade, I will say this coin is 64 on a good day.
Now to see the other replies:
Green label? or is that just in the pic that give it a greenish tint... you know what most people do with green slabs... With such a big jump from 60 to 63, then 64, it may be worth the $20 to go ANACS route, where they will only crack it out if it is at or above the grade you say.

Thanks JD, Yes its a green lable,but I'm not planning to crack it out and regrade it anytime soon.I bought it for my PCGS MS Date set. Thanks Tim.  Edited by TLS5933

Boy was I off. I still say it looks better than a MS62 to me.

Why only an MS62? Were they graded differently and more aggressively in the "green label" era? Explain please.

Dealers all over the country have been cracking out the "old" green labeled coins, because grading was a lot more strict in that era than it is now. A friend cracked out a St Gaudens that was a 62 green label, came back as a 64... a big price jump for whatever date it was... But I guess one could argue this could happen with about any coin, all depends on the day and the mood of the graders.

When a coin gets into the MS61 to MS64 range I think they acutally get harder to grade as one or two bagmarks or slight luster change can change the grade by two or three grades either way.

I suspect it's partly that they didn't want to "manufacture value" with a conditional rarity like the 1893-P is. For that reason, cracking for an upgrade might be difficult. Golly - great coin, wierd grade.
If you've got anything less that $750 in that coin, you are sitting pretty.

That's a wierd grade for sure. But PCGS is known to umm...indirectly control their population data to boost up the value of their slabs. You've got a great coin there either way!
