Quite a bit of wear on the obverse, trace wear on the reverse. Seems to have been creatively photographed may be cleaned. I would say somewhere between XF45 and AU50 based on the wear.

I would not necessarily say that....these sometimes have strike issues. Check comparable unc examples on heritage and then grade based off that.

Are you sure those bag marks aren't depressions? They look rather soft. Usually bag marks are sharper and not as rounded. Also on the reverse, is that a spike below the eagle at the 6 o clock position? I'm certainly no expert but some of those need to be looked at.

I think it is AU-58 minimum with the amount of luster pictured. Could go all the way to 64 if there is a lot more luster than shown. I agree with bherring, fair buy at $400 if the coin is raw and those are the only pics to go by.

I think the luster in this photo has been doctored through creative photography. The underlying coin is not impressive and does not look like any MS example I can find. YMMV.

Could be strike weakness hard to tell from the photo I'd have to see the luster in hand

Yes fenton, this is common. All it takes is a bit of die wear and the coins start looking "worn" from the get go. And you're right, luster is so critical on AU and MS coins and also very difficult to capture in any photo.

How much is the offer price? Is there a return policy? I think that its MS, to be honest.

if this coin isn't MS I'll eat my hat! Whether it's genuine or not remains to be seen.... remember gold is a soft metal and lots of contact marks are not uncommon even in the higher grades!

Here is what the coin looks like with sharpness + 5%, contrast + 25%, brightness -25%. Going on the theory that the guy who photographed it didn't do any heavy doctoring but did try to "wash out" the surfaces.

Thank you for your replies. The coin is on auction. Starting price is 240 euros. There is no return policy. I am very undecided on what to do. Auction ends tomorrow. I was told that the photographs of this auction house are not very good, and often the coins look better in hand. What should I do?

Honestly this may well be MS but I'd take a rain check on it since it is not slabbed, poorly photographed, and at a minimum has a weak strike. You can buy nice certified examples at teletrade and heritage for a good price.

Assuming the auction house is insuring the authenticity, go 300 euro tops. You might get a steal and at 300 euro you're offering a bit more than 15% over melt. I wouldn't go any higher than that though.
