i agree.....I found out a long time ago that in order to get all the good stuff, you have to dig some trash. I lot of times you can miss rings as well in trashy areas

Im talking about both Bernie. 80% of those kind of spots I've known existed, and I may have done light internet and library research. I hunt many ballfields for instance, that really don't look old, and through digs discover that they are much older than I thought. My favorite spots are "invisible schoolhouses", in which I've researched the spot and it's now vacant property or a modern home now sits there. I then obtain permission to hunt. When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

I've discovered that ballfields were the sites of "traveling circuses" in some parts of the country, and may have been in use since the early 1900's to the 1960's, based on my finds of (coins dated 1871 - modern).
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

Trashy areas would suck with my low end ACE 150 but. Ill give it a try. I just hate getting those wild spuratic tones and cant designate what in the world it is. I guess ill just dig it!

I'm in NJ and trying to decide on a $500 - 750 detector.
It was suggest Minelab xterra 550, and Fisher F5. I liked the look of Garretts Ace 350 or AT Pro; and Fisher F70 or Whites DFX, for a little more $.
I was told there's a lot of clay in NJ, so need ground balancing.
Any suggestions or experience you care to share on a machine purchase for my first one?
Also, how do you obtain permission from people to search around their house?

I migrated from the DFX to Minelab simply because my detecting buddy was hammering all the good stuff every time we hunted hard-hit spots. I put a lot of faith into Minelab, I would recommend a used Explorer SE, which you can find online used for around $650-700. 128 frequencies at first are too much for a mind to process, but soon they sound like music to the ears. When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

Well, it comes naturally for some, for others it's gut-wrenching. I just walk up to the door, give some space (10 feet or so), smile, introduce myself, and in 50 words or less, explain that "my hobby is metal detecting, and would you care if I SCANNED your front yard?" I do not mention digging unless they inquire. I use a small Lesch dagger and always dig a neat plug. You will get a yes, or no answer. If no, thank the owner for their time, and move on. I will show the owner my finds, volunteer finds, but sometimes they could not care less. Now, on the ethics of gold or silver finds and ownership, that's a topic that I may discuss later. When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

May I suggest: old fairgrounds - old, new ballfields - old racetracks - along sidewalks - old drive in movie theaters - local parks - local beaches - city owned lots - and, my all-time favorite, drum roll please, Old Residential Front Yards - absolutely the BEST! When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...
