ND,

I'm going to guess that it was the 1878 Morgan dollar and it means "out of Many -- One". I believe the first time it was used was in a London Mag. called "Gentlemen's Magazine in 1731.

ND,

I forgot. The first time it was offically seen in America was when it was suggested by the Great Seal Committee in 1776

Catman,

You found the bonus question. GREAT JOB. However, you are a long ways off on the first coin to bear the motto.

OOPS!! E Pluribus Unum was first used on the 1786 New Jersey Copper. It means "out of many, one". Proposed by Franklin, Jefferson and Adams on Aug. 20, 1776 and first appeared on the Great Seal in 1782.

Pic of coin.

Now take into consideration that I am not in the office to take proper photos, but this is a decent pic.

The coin does look better.
