I picked up a few Morgans on Teletrade last week and think this one went for $35 + Buyer's Premium & Delivery. It didn't even make the minimum on the BP, which I didn't know about at that time because I'd never won a coin that cheap. I guess they have a $7 minimum on the BP. Still, I like it.  |

I like it also, but Fenton brings up an important fact..Toning can hide the true grade of the coin.. In my HOP...we can easily switch our focus from how SHINNY it is,,To the toning it may represent...,and it is a 120 year plus old coin...and NO TONING , Its late so0 I will not speculate even under the best of circumstances who magnificantly these GEM BU coins of 120 year old coins are with NO Toning or modifications....AND that the TPG'S are well knowledgable of this...Good night all.. |

Brad, While I like the coin, I feel the price WAS right and you DID well, I see footprints of a cleaning some time ago, especially the reverse. I would NOT of thought the coin would come away with the grade it did for many reasons, I believe the wear on the obverse in the hair above the ear and all below the ear and above the date is far to much for THE STANDARDS to of allowed the coin this grade while the reverse shows wear on the talons the olive branch and the entire wreath exhibits wear that it is VERY hard to see the finer details of the leaves in areas, much less the bow, which also has obvious wear. I believe IMO, this coin shows wear to the extent of NOT being able to support the given grade with the wear shown, while on the other hand I too have been doing some TT searching/lurking/bidding and have come away with some very interesting Morgans, I do NOT believe the grades on some of the slabs labels, You did well on the price and would IMO think with all said the coin would according to the ANA'S grading standards, come away with a lower grade. I would ask what grade do YOU feel according to these standards should this coin grade, being you have the coin in hand? |

Apparently when those old Morgan dollar mint bags were cracked open (i.e. GSA hoard), the vast majority were blast blazing white with frosty luster. A few had nice crescent toning with moon type surfaces (intense light/dark contrast on boundary) I bought one of those recently and am VERY happy with him. |

I think I'd buy an MS-65 if Morgan's Dad thinks it is true grade. He's one tough detail oriented grader!

I see your point Mike. Sometimes the AU58 pieces wiggle their way into MS holders. Maybe this is such a case but I see it as MS at this point - I'll take another look today. If it's truly MS, it looks more like a 64 than a 62.  |

I'll take a STAB at his one...and I don't know what years of the "O" mints are known for are strikes, just looking at the ear..its worn or weak int he strike...however the face is wonderfull...very clean...the obverse.. the tallons are weak...all of them.. more than I would like to see...but only one real ding.on the chest...I stab at MS64+ due to the OVB. even thought the reverse has a ding...with todays grading standards you can't have a borderline MS anything.. one must posess a half point grade higher to get the grade...in other words...an MS65 coin must be better than MS65 but not as good as MS66, to receive the MS65 grade...THAT SUCKS....these tyrants are controlling the dollar or how many old timers that have had there stuff under the bed//and now it effects how many are known..BOTTOM line..it effects the overall prices they guarentee....to do that...tighten up the standards...let fewer high MS coins in to the system while the economey inputs more coins than they need into the system...

Fenton since you know the grade already...I will say MS65 tallons suck,but over all I would not be supprised to see an NGC MS66
Just my wild guess...Over and above...but would not be supprised..
What is the grade?

It is slabbed 64 I think they under graded it by at least one level

I am late into the discussion. But the only way I know how to grade Morgans or Peace dollars for that matter is to look, and look, and look at slabbed coins, over, over and over again. Then, when I have done that, I ask Ozland for his opinion. He is the best Morgan grader outside a TPG I have ever met. |

One should always seek the advice of those who continually review the high end coins for there opinion..It's not enough to consistently review AU and Mid MS coins to know what the TPG's are accepting as MS65 and above... |
