bherring, does it damage the coin ? Is it easy to see that it's been cleaned ?

In some instance people put all kinds of solutions in those things and some damage coins and jewlery. Some people think you need soaps, acids or almost anything in them and some just use water. Regardless, it is not smart to clean coins. Here is a thought. A friend of mine's wife put her engagement ring in one of those and the diamond fell out. Only a hundred dollars to fix. Be carefull with things you know nothing about. |

Read justcarl's comment above. Again, I don't recommend cleaning any coin. Anywhos - using GooGone for a few minutes in a plastic basket ultrasonic cleaner when the coins CANNOT touch each other or any metal surface does remove some dirt/grime. And no, it doesn't leave the coins looking "cleaned" but I'd never do this with a coin I was going to submit for TPG. I used to sort through bulk wheaties and GooGone worked well on the ones that I wanted to save and place in 2x2s. I used Lindner's Coin Cleaner and MS70 (silver coins only!) also. MS70 WILL leave silver coins looking cleaned and will turn copper coins pinkish. Lindner's is in between GooGone and MS70 in strength and I found it to be a good product but pretty darn pricey. As an FYI. I recently bought this coin with my ebay Bucks: https://goccf.com/t/78007I'll give it a few minutes in the US cleaner with GooGone and post the results in a few days (after I receive it!). |

Is this the same type of ultrasound that is used for Watch movements?

Read ultrasound can be used for reading filed off serial number from metal,mainly guns
could it be used for reading/retoring worn off dates on coins.
Something with the vibration go deep into the metal cuases a stress release similar to heating but with no heat damge and make filed off serial number reappear.
Was reading serial number restoring can be done with
acid , sound waves , heat/cold forging to get the number to re appear
I am trying right now with a worn SLQ to get a date , I am heating cooling heating cooling over and over
I want to see if its true the " low pressure die points " will expand maing a date reapear.
Like it does with serial numbers
police do this with gold and silver jewlery that has had the inscriptions filed off when stolen and resold
i have searched online but it seems to be a close kept forsenic secret how they do it.
what temps, how fast they cool and heat , and the ultra sound as well.
I just read its the tools they use but not much on how they use it

bherring,it would be interesting to see the results...and yes I know cleaning is a no no...however there are circumstances when it's unavoidable...such as MD finds

I hear you jbuck and rarely "conserve" the coins I buy. This one is a maybe. Some very light conservation might help. We'll see after she arrives!  |

The coin arrived today and I'm going to give this one some thought. The "dirt" is very light and the coin looks nice as is. It might be going into an Air-Tite for now. Here's my images:   |

I agree with the last two comments! Your photos are much better than the previous ones you posted. This coin has some great character; I would hate to see it diminished. |

Yes, she's residing in an Air-Tite. The auctions images had me wondering if the dirt was heavy but it is not.
I have some Veri-Gone and acetone on hand and thought of giving her a soak but those won't likely effect this piece.
