Long over due, GREAT IDEA!Will you select pictures from already posted pictures! Or do you want ALL new ones?
No reason why we can't use pics already posted. They just need to be
good, and I don't say that to belittle anyone's photography. This is something we're going to be sending new members to, when they ask how to grade a Morgan. Of course, we can talk about grading any time we want - that won't change - but I want something we can point to that will leave no doubt in the mind of someone who has never graded before.
A point to make here - we're going to use strict ANA grading, not market grading. We're gonna grade them like Susan would, not like I do.
Don't let her hear that I said this, but she's a stupid good grader in the traditional, strict sense. That's how we're going to do this, and let
TPG comparisons fall where they may.
That's how I want newbies to learn to grade. It'll empower them to select only the good ones in
TPG holders.

I like the idea but will you include cleaned coins for those of us that don't have the experience in detecting them? It would make a very nice reference.
That's the next project, once the Grading Set is done. We're going to be busy in 2011, guys.

Grading.... I thought at first it was going to be about attributing since it seemed to be Morgan specific.
Two answers:
1)
This one is Morgan-specific. You don't think we're going to stop with a Morgan Grading Set, do you?

2) The attribution end of things is a longer-term project. It may be summer before I unveil the beginning of that, maybe even longer, but you're not going to believe it when it happens. It's going to change the playing field.

I would Propose we start like any system, from the beginning,,1878 P,S and CC examples...work them up a year at a time...so a simple regiment cam be worked on while later others who post any year previously assessed do not over run the work in progress.....One may think when the 1885 pictures are being collected, that the 1879 PO1 grade slot has been filled...that may not be the case...
This isn't year-specific. That would be way, way too much to bite off. One coin each, P01 through whatever we can generate (I imagine somebody has an MS66 1881-S laying around, or better). We therefore need to solve the varying-strike question. I think the solution to that might be to use secondary examples above, say, AU50-55 where strike actually comes into play.
Quote:For the "Official CCF
Morgan dollar Grading Set" you should use coins that are not toned. I always find it easier to see the details on a coin when there is no toning.
Absolutely agreed, with the understanding that some degree of toning is expected in lower-grade coins. At the very least, everything from EF-40 on up should be white. Below that, toning tends to aid grading rather than inhibit it because wear areas generally don't tone.
