Grading.... I thought at first it was going to be about attributing since it seemed to be Morgan specific.

I like the idea but will you include cleaned coins for those of us that don't have the experience in detecting them? It would make a very nice reference.

I hope ours look better than the Morgan pictures in PCGS Photograde.

On Photograde, PCGS really went out of their way to feature Morgans
with low eye appeal, regardless of their grade...
( with the exception of the MS-69 1881-S. )

Their supposedly "MS-67" 1898-O has hits and spots all over it...

I think your point is relative, Zee, and it's being discussed,
While the point of grading is on the chopping block I think its a great step forward, as such a difference is always noted on the
"CCF grading channel".
And while one does not have to re-invent the vamwheel...it does not mean there has to be only one site with vam-info. and its not about competing..its about getting the word and knowledge out...

I would Propose we start like any system, from the beginning,,1878 P,S and CC examples...work them up a year at a time...so a simple regiment cam be worked on while later others who post any year previously assessed do not over run the work in progress.....One may think when the 1885 pictures are being collected, that the 1879 PO1 grade slot has been filled...that may not be the case...
Also it may behoove us as the years progress(rather that totally stop until all grades are found) That You announce missing grades and years to querry those pictures while the main body continues in an orderly fashion to progress....Just a thought...

For the "Official CCF Morgan dollar Grading Set" you should use coins that are not toned. I always find it easier to see the details on a coin when there is no toning. (Is it just me?)

Long over due, GREAT IDEA!Will you select pictures from already posted pictures! Or do you want ALL new ones?

No reason why we can't use pics already posted. They just need to be good, and I don't say that to belittle anyone's photography. This is something we're going to be sending new members to, when they ask how to grade a Morgan. Of course, we can talk about grading any time we want - that won't change - but I want something we can point to that will leave no doubt in the mind of someone who has never graded before.

A point to make here - we're going to use strict ANA grading, not market grading. We're gonna grade them like Susan would, not like I do. Don't let her hear that I said this, but she's a stupid good grader in the traditional, strict sense. That's how we're going to do this, and let TPG comparisons fall where they may.

That's how I want newbies to learn to grade. It'll empower them to select only the good ones in TPG holders.

That's the next project, once the Grading Set is done. We're going to be busy in 2011, guys.

Two answers:

1) This one is Morgan-specific. You don't think we're going to stop with a Morgan Grading Set, do you?

2) The attribution end of things is a longer-term project. It may be summer before I unveil the beginning of that, maybe even longer, but you're not going to believe it when it happens. It's going to change the playing field.

This isn't year-specific. That would be way, way too much to bite off. One coin each, P01 through whatever we can generate (I imagine somebody has an MS66 1881-S laying around, or better). We therefore need to solve the varying-strike question. I think the solution to that might be to use secondary examples above, say, AU50-55 where strike actually comes into play.

Absolutely agreed, with the understanding that some degree of toning is expected in lower-grade coins. At the very least, everything from EF-40 on up should be white. Below that, toning tends to aid grading rather than inhibit it because wear areas generally don't tone.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was about to ask you how the coins would be graded, considering that grading is someones opinion.

So, between the grading set and the other thread where you need certain years, do you have a list of which grades & years you need?

All of them. Everything. If we don't use it for the Grading Set, we'll use it for the Morgan Year images. If we don't use it there, we'll attribute it and put it in the VAM Details pages for that year. Even if we already have the VAM, we can use additional images to show die progression and the like.

As long as your shots meet the standards we desire, it will be used.

Heaven help you Dave.. and your inbox!

I don't have too many anymore, but I think I still have some of my images. I'll send them in case they can fill a hole somewhere.

Holler if you need help (just, for everyone's sake, NOT with the grading ).

OK, here's how it's going to work.

I have enough donated shots - over 200 as we speak(!) - to start throwing stuff out there for grading. I'm sifting through them looking for nice examples with no "major" grade-affecting features. I'm going to start a thread for each coin, maybe one per day but no more than that, entitled Grade This: XXX Morgan where "XXX" is my rough guess at grade. Maybe I'll throw two worthy examples into one thread and we can compare. We can chew on each coin a bit, and if we seem to have a nice consensus on grade and worthiness for the set, it'll become part of the Grading Set. I'll work up a page where these will get parked as we choose them, and that way we can re-address individual coins later if we come up with something we like better for the grade.

Look for the first one Monday. We'll start at the bottom.
