PS...
Westminster Mint in Melbourne, Florida.
She has purchased from Franklin Mint in the past...so may have been on their 'hit list.'
Sounds like she paid $160 for a 'handsome display case'...?
(Cheap velvet badly glued inside a mahogany-ish box...that oh! sez "made in china" on the bottom!)

The "first strike" designation is meaningless. That has been being discussed here and I have a dealer friend who deals in high-end coins that has told me and the TPG's that the designation is worthless. The people who are paying a premium for them tend to be those who have not done their research and believe the hype.

Who graded the coin as MS70? If it's not PCGS, NGC, or ANACS, the grade is questionable.

There are many reputable sellers/dealers who she could purchase from online so she wouldn't have to leave her home if that is her desire. If she has a computer, I'd like to see her join the forum. The one thing that we stress most here is that it is necessary to learn about what you are buying before you turn over your cash.

Here's something that was archived from the RCC. It's not much and not too optimistic.

Thanks y'all...it's as I suspected, but sure wish I were wrong.
I guess the 'grade' is from 'ICG' -- that is what is written right before 'MS70'...also 'ICG certified #118 of 506'...
Sounds as though it may never be worth what she paid.
Better to dump it now and buy some cute shoes? ;)
Thanks again so much...hdh

Hi all...am new to the forum but have been actively following the discussions for a few months now. Will tell more about my coin interests in another thread. Susanlynn I believe this is the company your looking for. Westminster Mint Inc. is also Great Value Coins. They have a website.

Welcome to the forum, Vakarl. That is the same one that I found on Google, but H-bomb says it's in Florida.

H-bomb, for what it's worth, ICG is the fourth ranked TPG. It is unfortunate that your grandmother paid so much for this coin. Does she have any computer skills at all? We'd love to help her out here if she would join. I would much rather see your grandmother approaching this with some knowledge on her side and we'll all be happy to help with that.

I always try research things before spending that kind of me. I too have learned some things the hard way.

Thanks...no, I think her 'coin' days are over.
She did not 'seek this out' but was telephoned and ya know, sold the bill of goods. And she's a really trusting church-going gal.
We're actually trying to spare her the embarrassment.
And I have half a mind to call Westminster and give them a piece of what's left! ;)

Well, look on the bright side h-bomb- at least your mom got a real, albeit overpriced, gold coin instead of something that was merely gold-plated

I'd say hold onto it.

The above is correct. Thank goodness it wasn't a fake. So she might have over paid, and was duped in the process.

We have to move on from that and write it off as a bum rap.

Hold onto the coin and maybe it can be passed down to a grandchild?

See if grandma can get some info on this outfit/guy and contact the attorney general of whatever state they're from. Make a few follow up calls and see if you can get anything done, stick with it and don't let up, they're counting on people getting fed up with red tape and runarounds. In the meantime I'd make sure grandma doesn't buy anything from anyone over the phone. These people tend to bleed whoever falls for their B.S. as much as they can and you can bet they'll be back trying to sell her something else. It may be a while before they're back but they aren't going to forget. Change her phone number and keep it unlisted if she can be talked into it. One of my grandparents had a similar problem a long time ago and my parents, aunts and uncles had a heckuva time getting rid of them. These S.O.B.s would come around about once a year and soak them for whatever they could and then disappear. It was a mess, these scumbags make S.G.S. seem respectable.

The question I would pose as the AG is this:

Did the company conduct buisness Illegally or was it Unethically/Immorally (is that even a word?)

Agreed, but at the same time, isn't that aggregious?
To lie about the worth?
I believe we're talking 'fraud' here...

I don't want to cut hairs. If you believe illegal activity has occured, by all means, GO AFTER them.

Nobody should have to fall victim!
