Something you should know is that a coin dealer can only at very best give you a preliminary idea of what you have - most of them don't know much of anything about authenticating or grading coins, which is part of why the third party graders came around. If the dealer thinks it's real, send it to PCGS for professional authentication.

I will definatly send it in to be authenticated & graded I am just curious to see if they think it is legit and hopefully they will have a better scope than I do. Which grading service would you guys recommend NGC or PCGS and NY IDE on which catagory a coin like that would best fit into?

NYIDE must be a basement slabber, I haven't heard of them, but I do know the good grading companies, and this isn't one of them.

Given some high resolution pictures, I suspect the experts on here can authenticate it for you

Frisco, Texas here. I think finding a 1914-D cent in a box of bank rolls nowadays is harder than finding a needle in two hay stacks.

MikeBrax - send it to PCGS or NGC since they are the only two widely recognized services.
CoinStar - 491X1, then 3C0X1. I ended up not doing my appointed job more than I did my appointed job. I just followed the "needs of the Air Force".
There is no such thing as NYIDE on the commonly traded market. If that's some slabbing company, sending anything to them would be a complete waste of money.

Didn't you say that you've already determined that it has been altered?
