I seen AU's going for about $10 recently. MS63+ coins are going for much better premiums now at around $30+.

yeah the wide rim has been pretty popular for as long as I have been collecting. I wonder if I have a few rolls of them in the SDB since I have probably 100 or so rolls of these things in every date they made. I think I have something like 500 rolls all together of SBA Dollars that my Grandfather gave me. I would just hate to break open the rolls, I think I would rather them stay original

Hey, I have a 1979 S a certain someone sent me! I'll have to check to see what kind I have I guess, so I can label it!

Only the '79 P's had the wide rim Dottir. Sorry.

Bryan, I can understand keeping the rolls in tact, but I don't think I would have the will power!

Also, Dottir, yours is a regular business strike, not a proof.

Thanks Scooby Still so much to learn! I'm confused about S coins whether they're regular strikes or proofs. When in doubt I'll post and ask folks every time :)

Have I strayed to a US coin forum by mistake?

Or you'd like to remind us, darkside geeks, of what the real treasure is?

Without doing the math, sentimental or not, that sure is a lot of money to have tied up. Just ask yourself if Grandpa would rather see you smiling or scratching your head over this.
Me, I would probably make a few nice roll sets and look for some wide rim 79's and roll those up and invest the rest in something that will probably outperform the SBA.
I think it's an easy gamble, you cannot lose with something else in their place.

I was lucky and a member here just sent me a pair, one nice near date and a matching far date. I have them for my type set and probably not too many others in my collection.

Svslav. The one 1979 P variety has a thick rim which makes the date look nearer to the rim. That is the more valuable of the two.

With SBAs, it is even more confusing. The 1979 and 1980 SBAs were actually the last business strike coins minted at San Francisco(1981s were only available in Mint Sets). Most collectors would say that 1974 Lincolns were the last to be minted but the SBAs are usually overlooked due to lack of familiarity even though ~130 million were minted over the two years.

You can't just go by the thickness of the rim, you need to check the distance from the bottom of the numbers to the rim. There are some far date coins that have a thick looking rim because they are a MAD and not a near date.
