1973, 1974, 1976 (Bi-Cenntennials) S mints come in 3 versions.
Uncirculated 40% Silver, A Proof which is also 40% Silver and a Proof which is Clad, Copper/Nickel,no Silver.
*However, there were some 1974D, 1976D and 1977D Ike's that were struck on 40% Silver Planchets and they are worth thousands of dollars, if you are lucky to find one!*

Wow! All I can do is laugh at myself  I had a complete and total mental breakdown and failed to read the footnote stating, that only certain Eisenhower dollars are 40% silver. As stated before at least it was an inexpensive mistake and I'm sure it is not the only one that I will make. Thanks for not nailing me guys! |

Very Funny Thread I love it. The fact that you can laugh at yourself about it is cool I think everyone here has had a Brainfart concerning the hobby at one time or another. Myself, Way more than once  If the 74D is in really good shape 2.50 is about normal for the coin shows I have been to lately, They were $1.25 Not to long ago. Terry |

Timmy if that's the only mistake you make as far as coins go you will be the first in history lol. I don't know your age or how long you have been collecting but you are going to make a lot of mistakes in your collecting time but the only bad one will be the one that you didn't learn from. get the books and learn what your doing before you spend the money on coins. the money you spend on the books will be your most valuable lesson.

There are a couple of ways to tell the diff.
If you have a 40% S Silver Ike, compare it with a regular D or P mint mark Ike. You'll see the diff.
To me, one of the best, if not the best,is to go by the weight. All 40% Silver Ike's weigh approx 24.59 grams while the regular copper/nickel weigh only 22.68 grams. That's a big weight differance.

Thanks jbuck. That little test is alright  I did a quick test on some Kennedy halves and sure enough the silver looked like the picture and the clad did as well. |

You are very welcome. I like using it when I fill a page in a Dansco album that has both clad and silver proof coins in it. It helps assure me that I got them in the right holes.  |

I've bought some at Flea markets......some at Antique shops, face value at the bank, all very reasonably priced (cheap) but the nicest ones I have, came from the coin shop busted from Sets to go into my Dansco album !! ..... I'd encourage you to hit a coin shop if you have one........High Grade Ikes are so beautiful and look SO nice in an album ! |
