Hi StJoeBlues

I have just posted the images of the coin. Does anyone have any suggestions about this coin?

Thank you

Hi Agnes. It looks to me like it is post mintage damage. Also sometimes coins can have a weak strike causing some letters to look weak a smudged while others are more clear.

If it's anything besides PMD, it might be die stress.

Either way it's nothing big.

Thanks everybody.
I am new at this and just wondered what was going on with this coin. What about the lettering M in UNUM and and the you in E PLURIBUS and the dot at the left foot of the eagle? that dot is not on other quarters
Just asking..
Sincerely,
Agnes

I thought it almost looked like a cast counterfeit, but not sure who would bother to counterfeit your basic clad Washington quarter.

Who knows with this coin? I 'll hold on to this coin. There is very faint "D" by Washington's ponytail it is not showing in the picture.
How do I know if it is a real coin? Should I take it to a coin dealer? Should the authorities become aware of such coin circulating?

That would the normal location of the mintmark, indicating the coin is from Denver. I see no reason to doubt the authenticity of it as a genuine quarter, it has just sustained some circulation damage.

It is unlikely to happen much anymore, but back in the 80s and before, people would sometimes counterfeit coins to take to the casinos and put through the slot machines.

Best way to tell is a cast coin is looking at the edge of the coin. If the copper layer is present, then it is a normal coin.
